Accountant II

 

Position Summary/Accountabilities

Assists in the activities of the general accounting and reporting section. Performs accounting work requiring a thorough and updated understanding of accounting theory, practice and procedure.

 

 

Job Functions

Assists in the preparation of financial and statistical reports including financial statements, reports to regulatory agencies, management and others. Also aids in the drafting of moderate to highly complex financial statements, and footnotes for the aforementioned external and internal reports.

 

Develops accounting schedules, analyzes account balances, and analyzes and maintains accounting records in accordance with company procedures.

 

Analyzes and reviews variances in financial results from budget and prior periods.

 

Prepares source input, parameter tables, and other details of the financial accounting system, financial reports and other accounting related reports.

 

Participates in making recommendations for accounting adjustments, procedural changes and compliance with company procedures and various federal, state and local regulations in all areas.

 

Assists in collection and preparation of financial information and analyses for external audits of financial statements.

 

Researches issues related to application of generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory accounting requirements as applied to presentation of utility financial information.

 

Identifies applicable accounting principles for complex business transactions.

 

Responds to requests from regulatory bodies for accounting information and provides financial information to support regulatory and other audits.

Implements regulatory accounting requirements.

 

Develops accounting processes to support performance incentives (or performance incentive ratemaking) authorized by regulatory agencies or corporate management.

 

Prepares analyses and presents financial information in response to questions and inquiries from other areas.

 

Keeps fully informed of current developments in the accounting field, industry regulations, and company procedures as they apply to assigned work area.

 

Prepares special projects as required.

 

Maintains a working knowledge of various network software packages.

 

Physical & Environmental Requirements

Physical requirements include sitting for a long period of time, hearing and seeing. Environmental requirements include working indoors.

 

Technical/Job Skill Qualifications

The candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications, and have demonstrated the following technical or job skills:

 

Bachelors degree from an accredited college with a major in accounting, or equivalent experience.

 

Zero to two years experience in progressively responsible accounting activities preferably including public accounting, audit, or corporate experience.

 

CPA preferred.

 

Thorough knowledge of accounting theory, practice and procedure.

Proven ability to understand, develop and work with computerized accounting systems.

 

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

 

Ability to work effectively in a diverse work group.

 

Knowledge of common accounting software applications.

Team Work:  Able to share due credit with coworkers; display enthusiasm and promote a friendly group working environment; work closely with other departments as necessary; support group decisions and solicit opinions from coworkers; display team spirit.
