An incumbent applies knowledge of generally accepted accounting, auditing, and information system principles within the scope of authority along with the ability to apply the basic principles to the audits and special projects. Serves as “Auditor-In-Charge” (AIC) on low- to medium- risk audits.  Because of the independent nature of the work and travel requirements, an incumbent must be sufficiently qualified to perform job duties with limited physical supervision. 

 

Key job functions include the following:
Coordinates aspects of on-site audit preparation, participation and execution; identifies and reviews materials relating to particular audit activity; ensures that all potential audit issues have been addressed and examined, and identifies areas of non-compliance.
Follows up with business unit management to ensure that audit findings and recommendations have been implemented on a timely basis; reports non-compliance to higher level authority for subsequent action.
Provides advice and guidance to interested parties concerning general audit/assessment principles, opportunities and challenges to facilitate transition to new and better ways of doing business and to promote continuous improvement in all internal processes; may review proposed programs, standards, systems, products and processes to provide feedback with respect to adequate provision for internal controls.
Assists with the development and maintenance of audit programs and in the planning process for proposed future audits; suggests improvements to auditing methodologies and related activities.
Provides on-the-job training for auditing staff on topics such as those related to general audit procedures and methodologies; may participate in the training of on-site staff to enable them to provide adequate assistance and support during field auditing activities.
Assists third-party (external) auditors local or corporate audits by providing technical liaison between the parties; may facilitate the availability of data and resources to promote speedy and minimally disruptive project conclusion; may review preliminary audit findings, provide constructive feedback to external auditor and assist in the implementation of new/revised practices in response to validated systemic weaknesses or other risk factors.




Knowledge requirements:
Content and application of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and related federal, state and local regulatory requirements affecting the banking/financial services industry and operations.
Principles, industry standards and accepted practices relative to the auditing of various business aspects (ie. financial, operational, transactional, control, reporting, custodial and related) of the banking/financial services industry.
Basic internal policies, standards, practices and processes relating to the specific audit assignment.
Standards for documenting audit activities and findings.
Sources and availability of data and resources relative to the internal audit process.
PC business applications and related software (ie. Microsoft Word and Excel, Lotus Notes) sufficient to perform job duties.
Banking business practices including knowledge of loan and deposit servicing functions.
Current trends as they relate to industry standards and practices for auditing banking/financial institutions. 
Basic methodologies relating to coordination/management of project teams engaged in on-site audit activities.

 

Skill requirements:
Use computer spreadsheet applications to generate valid audit documentation.
Understand and apply regulatory requirements to audit activities.
Develop and maintain credibility/trust with peers and management.
Understand and apply the difference between commercial banks, savings institutions and mortgage companies.
Identify and evaluate systemic deficiencies and internal control weaknesses and strengths.
Present and explain audit findings and conclusions to department management.

 

Education and experience requirements:
Graduation from a four-year college or university, with major course work in a discipline related to the requirements of the position.  Directly related work experience may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the education requirement.
2+ years of directly related work experience at the level of Audit Consultant I or equivalent. 
Professional certification as a CPA, CIA, or CISA is desirable.
