Duties And Responsibilities
This entry-level position develops and maintains a web-based economic data system for the newly created Program on New Architecture for the National Accounts at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS) at Harvard. Reports to and works closely with the program's faculty director, Professor Dale W. Jorgenson. Analyzes, designs, programs, troubleshoots, and maintains software and database architecture (some original and some based on existing specifications) to process time-series source data from various government agencies into an integrated database, including linkages between related data. Maintains data loads. Designs and implements web interface to provide intuitive access to data and economic concepts to researchers worldwide. Works with end-users to tune and modify programs and enhance source data to address research needs. Works closely with DBAs and system administrators on all aspects of database administration, space allocation, web hosting, and account management and security. Works with the IQSS administration to ensure the smooth functioning of the Program. May hire, train, and supervise other programmers or web developers as necessary.
Required Education, Experience and Skills
Bachelor's degree. Strong background in economics, econometrics, and computer science, based on coursework or research experience. Proficiency with analytical tools (e.g. Matlab, STATA), with at least one general programming language (e.g. Visual Basic, C), and with web programming. SQL a plus. Excellent analytical skills. Previous computer-based research experience and evidence of good writing skills are a plus. Prior knowledge of national accounting would be desirable.

It is contingent on continued funding. ***** The Program on New Architecture for the National Accounts develops the novel data system described by Prof. Jorgenson in A NEW ARCHITECTURE FOR THE U.S. NATIONAL ACCOUNTS (University of Chicago Press, 2006). This new architecture is designed for economic research on long-term policy issues such as potential economic growth, rising health care expenditures, retirement income support, financing education, and providing housing.
