Sr Project Accountant

Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

The role of the Senior Project Accountant will be to perform accounting functions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and Phelps Dodge policies and procedures on projects under the direction of the Project Controller, maintain established project financial controls, and provide administration support on projects, managed by the Engineering Group.

1.Perform accounting duties required on assigned projects including review/processing of invoices, controlling vendor payments, recovery of overpayments, monitor back charges, and other items necessary to maintain a sufficient level of control on assigned projects.
2. Preparation and maintenance of financial entries for the project into the PD systems as required . Analyzes project costs, flags inconsistencies, and resolves these issues.
3. Performs various cost control reporting functions including preparation of project forecasts, cash call estimates, cost reporting, capturing and reporting costs within the PD systems.
4. Establishes and maintains orders for vendor payment within the Ellipse/Ariba systems .
5. May provide functional advice or training to less experience accountant positions on the project at the direction of the Project Controller.
6. Performs other duties as required

Minimum Requirements:

*Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or equivalent experience in closely related area;
*Five (5) years project accounting experience (an MBA will substitute for two years of the required experience)
*25%-50% travel required with specific temporary assignments at designated locations. The first project will be located in Safford and will last approx 2 years.
*Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures in project accounting.
*Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and practices of accounting.
*Strong business ethics
*Experience working in a construction project accounting environment
*Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards
*Knowledge of office procedures and equipment, including PCs and financial software.
*Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing

Preferred Qualifications:

CPA preferred, knowledge of Ellipse and/or Ariba systems is preferred

Criteria/Conditions(specific background and skills):

* Work is mostly performed in an office setting. Occasionally work will be performed in a mine, outdoor or manufacturing plant setting.
* While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs, talk, hear and see.
*Must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk and frequently lift /carry up to 10 pounds.
*Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing plant environment, including hart hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and other protective equipment as required.
