Responsible for Materials Engineering support and/or design activities including material selection, failure analysis, corrosion control, welding engineering, inspection engineering, coatings, linings, metallurgy, and nonmetallic materials. Provides expertise and knowledge in Materials Engineering aspects of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, Piping Codes, BASF Technical Standards, NACE Standards, and other industry standards related to Materials Engineering. Work is done for the BASF Freeport site, the BASF sites linked to Freeport and, when requested, for BASF sites worldwide. Occasional work is done for BASF customers and vendors.
Maintenance Support
Determine cause of failure of plant equipment. Recommend improvements to prevent recurrence.
Perform hands-on failure analysis when possible.
Use BASF AG and independent laboratories for failure analysis work that can't be done at BASF Freeport.
Perform reverse engineering of plant equipment to support manufacture of replacement parts.
Recommend U.S. substitutes for foreign materials of construction.
Provide inspection and repair procedures for damaged equipment.
Perform welding engineering.
Recommend inspection methods and technology. Lead critical inspection activities, such as BASF's large anhydrous ammonia storage tank.
Select materials of construction for new and replacement equipment.
Recommend coating and lining materials.
Perform corrosion testing and mitigate corrosion.
Evaluate overheated and distorted equipment.
Support risk-based inspection program.
Capital Support
Select materials of construction for new and replacement equipment.
Participate in quality control and inspection activities for plant equipment.
Perform welding engineering.
Recommend U.S. substitutes for foreign materials of construction.
Review specifications and drawings for new and replacement equipment and recommend improvements related to Materials Engineering, inspectability, and maintainability.
Assist with evaluation of potential BASF vendors.
Strategic Engineering Responsibilities:
Provide Materials Engineering support to COEs and other teams.
Review, validate, and provide feedback on new and revised corporate policies and procedures related to Materials Engineering issues.
Evaluate Technical Standards Deviation Requests.
Provide Materials Engineering assistance to linked and nonlinked sites, BASF customers, and vendors.
Keep abreast of new Materials Engineering and related technologies and implement when advantageous to BASF.
Educate BASF personnel in Materials Engineering and related disciplines.
Maintain and continue development of the BASF Materials Engineering website.
Write and review BASF Technical Standards, procedures, and guidelines related to Materials Engineering.
Liaison with Materials Engineering personnel at other BASF sites.
Shift Work (please be sure to note if this is position requires off shift or shift rotation)
Shift work is normally not required, however, occasional night and weekend work is required to support shutdown activities and emergencies.
Amount of travel involved (percentage of time, overnight / weekly?)
Job requires support of local Freeport site, other various BASF sites, BASF customers and vendors. Responsibilities require occasional travel to BASF sites worldwide, BASF customers, and vendors. Travel requirements vary depending on projects.

Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering with emphasis in Materials Science, or similar degree.
7+ years in Materials Engineering related to heavy industrial equipment, preferably chemical plant equipment. Experience should include hands-on failure analysis, fractography, metallography, corrosion control, metallurgy, nondestructive testing, inspection, welding engineering, material selection, metallic and nonmetallic materials, coatings, and linings.
Working knowledge of industry codes, standards, and recommended practices related to Materials Engineering, including the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ASME Piping Codes, ASTM standards, and NACE standards.
Self-starter, excellent verbal and written communication skills, organization, coordination, and leadership skills.
Strong computer skills. Professional Engineering license in the state of Texas.
5+ years experience in a Materials Engineering role for the chemical process industry.
Working knowledge of electrochemical corrosion testing.Working knowledge of fracture mechanics.
