POSITION TITLE: ASSISTANT CONTROLLER

 

REPORTS TO: CONTROLLER

 

 

SUMMARY:

 

The Assistant Controller is responsible for the development and preparation of weekly and monthly operational management reports, managing/monitoring projects by ?budgets vs. actual? and supports the operations management in meeting agency?s financial goals and targets.  Within this role, the Assistant Controller needs to possess the ability to manage tasks of increasing importance, and take on new situations utilizing their skills and experience under the supervision of the agency?s Controller.

 

DIRECT REPORTS:

 

The Assistant Controller supervises and oversees the job functions of the three Accounting Clerks, establishing direction and priorities as required.

 

 

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Assists in the preparation of financial statements by compiling and analyzing financial information.Assists in the annual budget preparations by compiling and analyzing financial information.Analyzes variances from budget and forecast on a weekly and monthly basis.Provides appropriate fee/budget recaps, reports and other financial reports to client account teams.Project management of software development projects.Establishes and maintains system controls that verify the integrity of systems, processes and data.Prepares weekly financial profit and loss reports.Completes monthly, quarterly and year-end financial closings of general ledgers including preparation, review and posting of journal entries, general ledger account reconciliations and analysis.Identifies trends and variances from monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements.Produces and publishes monthly, quarterly and annual consolidated financial statements and related management reports.Participates in a wide variety of special projects and compiles special reports as requested.Conducts various accounting analyses and research as requested.Monitors reporting deadlines and notifies the Controller of delays and issues in a timely manner.Updates net income and cash position projections for review by the Controller.Monitors timely fulfillment of audit requests, reporting any delays to the Controller and assists with the quarterly/annual audit and tax preparations.Acts as a liaison with accounting firm audit teams.Ensures accuracy in the completion of all responsible accounting department functions.Manages accounts payable and accounts receivable, ensuring timely completion of all daily, weekly and monthly procedures and tasks.Supervises, develops and coaches Accounting Clerks and continually exhibits sensitivity to the inter-relationships of both staff and functions within the agency.

 

 

 

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS/ATTRIBUTES:

 

A Bachelor?s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related degree is generally preferred for this position with 5+ years of previous general accounting experience within an agency or professional services environment.  The Assistant Controller must be capable of independent and critical thought and possess the ability to secure relevant information, identify key issues and relationships, draw conclusions based on financial analysis from a base of information; and relate and compare data from different sources.  He/she is required to have a strong knowledge of computer systems with high proficiency in Excel spreadsheets, considerable skills in producing accurate reports and continually demonstrate good business instincts and judgment.  This individual must be creative, self-motivated, work well in a cross-functional team environment, and possess excellent communication (verbal and written), analytical and problem solving skills.  Exceptional planning and organizational skills are also necessary in order to meet tight deadlines.  The Assistant Controller is expected to manage multiple priorities while demonstrating flexibility as priorities change, take ownership of various responsibilities, and ensure adherence to AbelsonTaylor policies and procedures.
