We are currently seeking a PR Specialist, Journals Content to be an integral part of our Journals Marketing team.
The Journals Content PR Specialist is responsible for supporting the US Journals publishing program by managing content-specific PR for select titles across 4 divisions: Medical, Professional, Science, and Academic (230-275 campaigns a year). Working as a key team member within the US Journals Marketing Department, the Journals Content PR Specialist manages the US journals PR initiatives, advising on newsworthy content, creating and maintaining the annual schedule, drafting all PR campaigns, coordinating draft reviews through internal and external clients, advising on and coordinating appropriate media lists for each campaign, and coordinating each release to publication of the journal content.
The primary responsibilities of this role will include:
Marketing StrategyDevelop and maintain a deep knowledge of current events such that you are aware of what journal content is newsworthy across all Blackwell divisions and subject areas, from gastroenterology to psychology. Develop and nurture media relationships to improve coverage of Blackwell content, working with Editorial and Production so that we can offer pre-publication access to content for key contacts or open access by subject area, for example, including analysis of media usage of our content to help determine best practices for turning content into news. Build web knowledge as it pertains to PR with the aim of increasing the list of targeted websites where Blackwell can promote our PR listings to stay competitive. Work with corporate PR and web publishing to keep abreast of Blackwell's blogging activity with the aim of greater exploit the PR opportunities in this realm. Other marketing strategy as necessary, including: Participation on and leadership of marketing and team-building working parties to improve communication and execution of PR and related marketing efforts globally; Participation on and leadership of corporate-level project teams that affect PR and Marketing -- such as Web development -- to continue to improve our public presence as a market and industry leader; Additional independent and team projects to devise and implement new marketing initiatives and client services that will enhance our Content-level PR program locally and / or globally.Public RelationsWorking with Product Marketing Managers and external clients, create and manage the annual schedule for all budgeted content-level PR such that client expectations are met and communicated throughout the year. Working closely with Product Marketing Managers, manages the article-level PR process for US journals across divisions such that all agreed deadlines are achieved throughout the year. Working with Product Marketing Managers, external clients, and Marketing Coordinator, create and route all (230-275) press releases, select audience for each, and send the press releases as scheduled. Advise Marketing Product Managers and external clients on newsworthy content such that Blackwell achieves the best possible results from our media campaigns while effectively managing internal and external client expectations. Regularly provides accurate and thorough reports on PR results by gathering, analyzing and organizing data ? including the variables affecting those results such as geography, topic, demographic, timeliness, and headline -- for internal and external dissemination to guide our PR program going forward. Reports PR coverage to Product Marketing Managers as well as directly to authors, maintaining and improving Blackwell?s reputation as an author-friendly, proactive publishing partner. Work with the Marketing Coordinator to build, maintain, and market to an in-house media contacts list and be the main point of contact for information about changes to the licensed media database to become more competitive in our content PR efforts. Works with Marketing Managers, Product Managers, and Corporate PR Department to continually improve the PR program, implementing new strategies and services -- such as re-releasing PR on previously published content as it becomes topical content post-publication -- to maintain Blackwell?s competitive edge in the public domain. Works with Marketing Managers and Product Managers to promote, create, and refine streamlined, departmental-wide PR procedures to ensure consistent systems across subjects, departments, and divisions.Employee Development & TrainingOversees the PR work of the Marketing Coordinator, including prioritizing and delegating projects as well as editing any releases drafted by him/her to help coach and encourage the Coordinator?s professional development. Develop and conduct an annual PR Course to inform and empower internal clients globally and across departments including Global Marketing, Editorial, and Production.ConferencesAs required, provide support at a minimum of 5 conferences, to include setting up and manning a Blackwell exhibit, speaking with existing and potential customers, authors, editors and society executives, and taking orders for books and journals to help promote the Blackwell image and to help maintain strong internal and external relationships.
Qualifications:Minimum of 1 year directly related PR experience required, including general knowledge of marketing and promotion strategies. Associates Degrees required, Bachelor?s Degree preferred.
Demonstrated effective organization and project management skills are essential including the ability to prioritize effectively and manage multiple projects/tasks and deadlines simultaneously. Requires demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills at all levels of business with a strong orientation to providing outstanding service in order to effectively facilitate a multi-faceted process through various internal and external parties and to communicate effectively with all internal and external contacts. Strong relationship management skills are essential including the ability to relate successfully to people at all levels of business and to form and maintain strong relationships and partnerships with those people. Strong copywriting ability required, including the ability to write copy appropriate for multiple markets including text, trade, library, and medical. (Copywriting test part of interview process) Must have a keen attention to detail and strong follow-up skills with the ability to proactively identify and address problems quickly and independently. Must have a high level of proficiency with the MS Office suite, with specific emphasis on MS Word as well as internet use for searching and research. Experience with computer database systems is highly desirable. Must have demonstrated general knowledge of advertising and promotion strategies in order to write and organize copy for use in effective marketing and promotional campaigns. Must have the ability to work independently and have solid judgment and decision-making skills.
