Wood Chip Analyst

SUMMARY The woodchip analyst is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and reporting on the quality of wood chips and wood based fuel delivered to Charleston Mill, analyzing and reporting on samples collected from conveyors within the mill, and special projects as needed by Wood Procurement, Wood yard or other mill personnel.  The individual is also responsible for identifying problems and beginning the process of ensuring their resolution.

RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Collect and process incoming chip samples.
1. Monitor chip arrivals and select loads to be sampled.
2. Ensure sample integrity by adequate record keeping and appropriate sample splitting.
3. Process samples with Rader particle size analyzer, and ensure accurate collection of information into database.
4. Do hand test of bark content.
B. Process conveyor samples.
1. See A2-A4 above.
2. Conduct moisture tests and report on average moisture content for monthly wood
cost analysis.
3. Burn samples to ash, and convey to Process Control Lab for sand analysis.
C. Issue reports on chip quality.
1. Special reports as requested by Wood Procurement or mill personnel (spreadsheets etc.).
2. Fax report information to suppliers.
3. Work with IT group to improve and modify reports to best suit desired outputs.
D. Monitor chip shipment arrivals, identify problems and start the process of ensuring
resolution.
E. Special projects as needed.
1. Support supplier?s quality improvement efforts.
2. Wood yard supervision - for example, to support fine tuning of design changes that impact chip quality.
3. Tech Services.
4. Document species for misidentified railcars.

REQUIREMENTS
Must be a self-starter responsible for his/her own work.
Intermediate experience with MS Office Suite is preferred.
Much of work is outside, so exposure to elements, including dust is a regular part of the
job. Chip samples of approximately 4-8 pounds must be handled, including carrying and
lifting to shoulder height.  Some walking on rough terrain (e.g. chip pile) is required.
HS Diploma is preferred.
