Business Editor, The Gazette: lead an established and well-run business section

While you'll assume autonomous leadership of an established and well-run business section, you'll also have opportunities to showcase your innovation and implement changes to make a great section even better. This influential position will provide you with high visibility both within our organization and throughout our industry, and your success could set you up to pursue a variety of opportunities within the Gazette, Freedom Colorado Information, and Freedom Communications, Inc.

Your mission will be to heighten our focus on the human-interest side of business journalism, recognizing that "business" has a much more pervasive impact on people's day to day lives than many of us realize. You'll act as a creative force to envision and describe new features and opportunities (such as showing reporters how to turn otherwise dry business stories into A1 material) and then get your staff of five excited about making these opoportunities real. We'll also look to you to evaluate our operational processes and features with an eye to building on strengths, addressing weaknesses, and identifying opportunities that we have yet to exploit.

We're looking for a charismatic professional with a solid foundation (five years or more) of newsroom experience, including editing; previous management experience is preferred. You don't need a business journalism background; in fact, the fresh approach an "outsider" might bring could be a plus. To be a good fit for this role you'll have a bachelor's degree in journalism or a related discipline, but more important will be your faith in the future of local news and fearlessness about using whatever methods necessary to deliver it.
