Position Description:

Feature Designer

Variety, the primary entertainment trade journal in Los Angeles, needs someone with high energy and enthusiasm to join our features design team.

We're looking for candidates who have the discipline and skills to work within our design template but can also think outside the box, who recognize that successful newspaper presentation is a marriage of words and visuals, and who can juggle multiple sections.

Collaboration and communication skills of the diplomatic kind are key; you?ll be working with editors, graphic artists and photographers to conceptualize art packages ... and if you can read minds all the better. Being proactive with ideas is a must, which requires familiarity with the content of our editorial in particular, and a knowledge of the entertainment industry in general.

Qualifications:

Our three-person design team is responsible for designing 250 feature sections a year ? ranging from our annual Oscar, Emmy and Cannes coverage to consumer-style magazines.

Applicants must have at least five years of newspaper feature design and strong skills in design, typography and art conceptualization. Knowledge of Quark (we?re on PCs) and Photoshop is required.
