Public and Media Relations Manager

The Public Relations Manager assists with the development, coordination and implementation of targeted media relation's strategies. Identifies and responds timely to print and broadcast journalists' requests for information (as appropriate), patients and related issues. Serves as spokesperson for Exempla when appropriate. Develops corporate goodwill programs for all media relations. Responsible for ensuring that Exempla is presented in a positive light to the community through the media. Develops and maintains plans for ongoing media relationships and collaborative partnerships. Works with other communication team members to develop activities and events that will enhance the reputation of Exempla.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Program Management - Media: Develops and maintains contacts with local, state, national and trade media. Organizes and operates a system for identifying story opportunities appropriate for media outlets. Monitors media coverage of hospitals and health care to generate ideas for stories and tracks coverage. Responds to media inquiries quickly and accurately. Coordinates the selection and prepares appropriate media spokespeople for news stories.

2. Program Management - News Events: Prepares news releases, community calendar announcements and media advisories for release to the media, including health education seminars, crises communication, announcements, and patient information. Coordinates news conferences and other events and material needed to secure coverage for the hospital, its affiliates and physicians.

3. Communication Plans and Training: Works closely with the Corporate Communications and other members of Marketing management to advise management on media issues. Reviews, updates and implements media policies for the organization. Provides spokesperson training and basic media training to staff. Works with department staff to develop communication plans for public and media relation's functions or opportunities. Leads crisis communications team, and is one of the Public Information Officer designee on the hospital's emergency response team.

4. Integration: Coordinates the integration of public relations programs/projects with other departments or areas. Coordinates media activities within department.

5. Education/Training: Assists in the presentation of departmental programs. Assists in training staff in new policies and procedures.

6. Operations: Assists in operational troubleshooting and in streamlining work processes.

7. Special Events: Identifies opportunities for Exempla to participate or host special events. Coordinates arrangements with other public relations staff and hospital departments.

8. Reporting: Designs, develops, and formats project status reports for distribution. Assists with the usage of information/performance results and media tracking/valuation.

9. Supervision: Provides supervision to other public relations coordinators. Develops on-call assignments for media team.

10. Partnerships: Develops collaborative partnerships and long-term relationships with community leaders, programs and services that would be beneficial for Exempla to associate.

Education & Experience Requirements
At least 10 years experience in communications, marketing and/or public relations.
At least 5 years experience in the health care industry.
At least 5 years leadership/management experience.
Bachelors degree required in comparable field of study (Marketing, PR, Communications).
Masters degree preferred.
