Scenic Carpenter

The primary duty of the Scenic Carpenter is to execute the designs of the Display Designer by employing basic theatre carpentry skills including flat construction, platform construction, crate/road box construction, trim carpentry, general painting, lighting and specialty projects. Also maintains the sets and displays once they are constructed including loading and unloading and set-up and teardown. Travels as needed to support programs and events. Participates in the load-in/load-out, setup and strike of Customer Education and Development Group programs. Assists in executing lighting plots for programs and events including hanging instruments, focusing instruments and assisting with the running of lights for programs and events. Assists in the day-to-day shipping and receiving in the warehouse and with warehouse and shop housekeeping. Responsible for assisting with the housekeeping of the work area where the sets and displays are constructed and with maintaining a safe environment.

Qualified candidate will have a BA in Technical Theatre or equivalent theatre carpentry experience. Solid knowledge of standard theatre carpentry techniques and experience using all standard scene shop tools including table saw, chop saw, band saw, drill press, standing sander, drills, circular saw, sanders, jig saw, router and other standard hand tools. Time as a professional theatre carpenter in a LORT, regional or summer-stock theatre is preferred. Ability to read and understand technical drawings and a basic understanding of electricity and simple wiring. Excellent math skills including basic knowledge of geometry. Knowledge of theatre lighting and ability to hang, focus and run a show. Strong attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines. Ability to work in a team environment. Willingness to travel and work long hours as needed. Employs safe work practices and maintains a safe work environment.
