Position Description:

Software Architect

Fox Interactive Media (FIM), a start-up division of News Corporation, is seeking a Software Architect to work on the new ?MyFox? brand of Local web sites. The FIM Production Team will be charged with providing top-tier solutions to complex challenges in support of major initiatives in the areas of Local News, Community, Entertainment and Broadcasting.

Projects will include:
1. Robust website redesigns
2. Development of Content Management Systems
3. Integration of current social software (RSS, Blogs, Podcasting) tools and exploration of future technologies
4. Broadband content creation and distribution platforms
5. Wireless development
6. Game development

The Software Architect supports and develops Fox Interactive Media?s software applications by analyzing, planning, creating, maintaining and leveraging pre-existing software systems to help support ongoing development. This role ensures the selected architecture fits existing, planned and external architectures; carefully formulating designs through technological feasibility studies and efficient prototyping, while seeking to reduce architectural and project risks.

Analysis and Design
- Conducts fact gathering sessions with customers.
- Consults with Technical Managers and Business Owners to identify and analyze technology needs and problems.
- Participates in group application design activities.
- Performs data flow diagramming and/or process modeling (code architecture).

Production Support
- Identify problems and analyze potential solutions including workarounds.
- Work with other Technology departments on integrated system support, as required.

Administrative
- Works as a member of a cross-functional, integrated development team.
- Works with the other Software Engineers to continually improve implementation strategies, development standards and other departmental processes and documentation.
- Provides technical assistance and mentoring to lower level Software Engineers.
- Communicates plans, status and issues to management on a regular basis.
- Adheres to department standards, policies, procedures and industry best practices.

Knowledge
- Excellent technical knowledge of Java in a web application environment required; knowledge of J2EE required.
- Good understanding of JDBC required.
- Experience with Oracle PL/SQL is a plus.
- Excellent understanding of deployment strategies for distributed and multi-tiered applications.
- Knowledge of Software Development Life Cycle methodologies and OO development concepts.
- In-depth knowledge of Java Web Services Developer Pack 1.5 preferred
- In-depth knowledge of Apache Tomcat Webserver, Struts framework, Tiles and Oracle 9i.
- Knowledge of Linux operating system required.

Skills
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Computer Science; Master?s degree a plus.
- Translate the Business roadmap into architecture/ Technology roadmap, ensuring that Technology balances the short and long-term business needs with short and long term technological realities.
- Advanced skills in creating process flow diagrams and flowcharts using Visio or similar charting tool.
- Advanced skills in developing programs using Java, Struts framework and Tiles.
- Understanding and experience with objected oriented analysis and design.
- Experience with XML, XSLT, Perl, C++, C#, .NET, Web Services, Oracle and stored procedures a plus.

Experience
- 7+ years hands-on architecting experience.
- 4+ years Object Oriented design experience.
- 5+ years experience with Java, servlets and web applications, preferably for a large scale web site.
