President/Chief Executive Officer

The Organization
Located in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) is a statewide not-for-profit organization that serves and supports the needs and interests of 159 credit unions in Minnesota.  The Network, working in conjunction with the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and CUNA Mutual/CUMIS Insurance, provides hundreds of products and services, ensuring that Minnesota credit unions have access to the best financial options for their members.

Affiliates of the Network receive compliance support, training, and development opportunities for credit union staff and volunteers, as well as assistance with grassroots lobbying initiatives on the state and federal level.  The Network also maintains relationships with media outlets around Minnesota and facilitates a cooperative advertising campaign, providing added visibility for the industry.

Mission Statement - To promote an environment that ensures credit union health and prosperity through the provision of high quality products and services that help credit unions meet present and future challenges.

The Position
The Minnesota Credit Union Network is looking for a professional individual to lead and grow the organization.  Reporting to the Board, the Chief Executive Officer is primarily responsible for visionary leadership over the long term.  He also is responsible for planning and directing all network activities in accordance with policies as established by the Board.  He or she will also be responsible for ensuring financial stability commensurate with the best interest of the state?s credit union members.  Additional CEO responsibilities include leading, guiding, and coaching the staff of 30 plus to provide the highest quality of member service.  He or she will directly supervise the staff of the network, Network Services Corporation, Minnesota Credit Union Foundation, Minnesota Item Processing Corporation and the Minnesota Credit Union Services Corporation.

Key Accountabilities

? The primary focus of the President/CEO is to provide service to member credit unions

? Leadership characteristics ? a visionary that exemplifies trust ? someone who manages relationships and can relate to credit unions of all asset sizes and complexities

? Develop and implement legislative initiatives and propose and/or successfully lobby for legislation beneficial to credit unions at both the State and National levels

? Represent the Minnesota Credit Union Network and its Affiliates as a spokesperson at local, regional and national credit union functions

? Implement appropriate actions to accomplish the missions of the Network. Direct the planning process and the development of goals, action plans and budgets for the Network and its Affiliates

? Keep the Board of Directors fully informed on the conditions and operations of the Network and its affiliates, and on all important factors influencing them

? Develop, present to the Board of Directors, and successfully manage an annual budget.

? Plan, formulate and recommend for the approval of the Board of Directors basic policies and programs which will further the objectives of the Network and its affiliates

? Execute all decisions of the Board of Directors except when such decisions are specifically assigned by the Board to other persons for implementation

? Review, analyze and evaluate the overall progress and results against plans and budgets to ensure soundness of the operation through the application of appropriate business principles, regulatory compliance and sound financial management

? Direct the development, implementation, delivery, and maintenance of products and services made available to members through the Network and its Affiliates.

? Attract, retain and motivate key personnel to contribute to the operation of the Network and ensure qualified people are available for management succession

? Serve as a spokesperson to the media; when schedule permits, accepts public speaking invitations, as appropriate

? Develop and maintain a quality compliance program for Minnesota Credit Unions

? Assist in the development and promotion of educational programs for credit union staff and volunteers in Minnesota

? Frequent travel throughout the State of Minnesota and several National meetings as required

 

Secondary Functions

? Develop and maintain desirable relationships with Minnesota Department of Commerce and NCUA

? Ensure adherence to all established policies and procedures

? Develop and maintain a business philosophy designed to ensure a standard of excellence in service

? Maintain active membership in affiliated trade organizations to be aware of the latest developments and trends

 

Qualifications
The fully qualified candidate will possess an established track record of a minimum of five years of successful leadership/senior management experience in a financial services/credit union or trade association setting; previous credit union related experience is highly preferred.  A Bachelor?s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Management or Certified League Executive designation, or equivalent is required.

The individual selected will possess a commitment to and understanding of the credit union movement with visionary leadership skills that can guide the Minnesota Credit Union Network into the future.


The incumbent must possess solid interpersonal skills necessary to gain the trust and respect of member credit unions, volunteers, staff, peers, and external business contacts.  He or she will be an effective communicator on multiple levels, written and verbal, with excellent listening skills.  The candidate must be analytical, self-motivated, and possess the ability to work in high-pressure situations while maintaining a positive attitude. He or she will exhibit excellent member service skills and be highly visible with the Network, legislature, and  community.


Ability to work effectively with people in a diverse environment that encompasses regular deadlines, where change is always possible and flexibility is essential.  The ability to motivate or influence others is a material part of the job, requiring a significant level of diplomacy and trust.  Obtaining cooperation and consensus (internally and/or externally) is an important part of the position.


Must have an in-depth understanding of and the ability to interpret regulatory and compliance matters affecting credit union operations.  Strong management, computer technology awareness, leadership, communication, situation assessment skills, and a marketing aptitude are required.
