Bioinformatics Scientist II/III

Bioinformatics Scientist II/III

454 Life Sciences is commercializing novel instrumentation and services for rapidly and comprehensively conducting high-throughput nucleotide sequencing, with specific application to the sequencing of whole genomes and ultra-deep sequencing of target genes. The Company's successful submission of a complete adenovirus sequence to GenBank in 2003 marked the first time a new technology was used to sequence a whole genome since Walter Gilbert and Frederick Sanger won the Nobel Prize in 1980 for their invention of DNA sequencing in 1977. 454 Life Sciences' system enables one individual to prepare and sequence an entire genome after performing a single sample preparation, irrespective of the size of the genome being studied. The hallmark of 454 Life Sciences' technology is the PicoTiterPlate(TM), which allows a single instrument using patented light emitting sequencing chemistries to produce over 20 million nucleotide bases per five-hour run, totaling more than 100 times the capacity of instruments using the current macro-scale technology. The technology is commercially available at 454 Life Sciences' 454 Sequencing Center, which offers sequencing services to clients world-wide whereby samples are sent to and sequenced by 454 Life Sciences, and from Roche Diagnostics, the exclusive world-wide distributor of the Genome Sequencer 20 System and reagents. 454 Life Sciences is a majority-owned subsidiary of CuraGen Corporation (NASDAQ: CRGN).  454 Life Sciences Corporation is an Equal Opportunity Employer (EOE).

We are looking for a Bioinformatics Scientist to participate in computational tools development and data mining to support ultra-high throughput genome sequencing and comparative genomic analysis.  Specific responsibilities for the position include whole genome assembly, massive sequence alignment and mutation analysis, and comparative genomics.  The candidate must have strong programming skills, capable of designing and implementing data analysis strategies and pipelines.  The candidate will also participate in evaluating external software packages and integrating them internally.

All candidates for this position will need to possess knowledge and skill in Perl programming, Linux and Shell scripting, as well as database access methods (Oracle/MySQL).  Candidates must have significant scientific programming experience in sequence analysis, high-throughput sequencing and genotyping.  As an expert user of biological sequence databases, the candidate is expected to possess strong capability in data mining and pattern recognition.

The candidate for this position will apply his or her knowledge and experience to impact project direction, with expectation to develop and communicate promising ideas, and work in a team environment.  Candidates must effectively manage change, while inspiring colleagues to help meet departmental milestones and work thoroughly, and in a fast paced manner.

Requirements also include a Ph.D., or M.S. or equivalent in Biology, Bioinformatics, or Computer Science, with at least 3 to 5 years of relevant hands-on experience in a research and development environment specializing in high throughput genomics.

If you would like to apply for this position and come help us change the world by developing cutting edge technologies that enable massive scale genome analysis at the speed of light, please email your cover letter and resume to careers@454.com
