Biological Safety Officer

The Rush University Medical Center (RUMC) Office of Research Integrity seeks a full-time academic professional to develop, implement and manage a comprehensive biosafety program at RUMC. The program requires managing biosafety issues, recombinant DNA, infectious materials and waste, blood borne pathogens and tuberculosis in research and clinical laboratories. Under the direction of the Senior Director, Office for Research Integrity, serves as the Institutional Biosafety Officer(IBO). The program provides guidance in assessing the risk of working with human, animal and plant pathogens, human tissues, fluids, cells, rDNA materials, gene transfer and laboratory animals. Said program must comply with NIH, CDC, OSHA and other federal and state agency laws and regulations.

Position Type: Full-Time
Education/Special Skills Required: Master's degree in biological science such as microbiology, virology, or closely related field and 3 plus years' experience analyzing biosafety issues or managing a biosafety program. Must have working knowledge of environmental and occupational safety and health principles and regulatory requirements, as it relates to biological materials. The successful candidate must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, work well independently and have strong interpersonal skills, promoting team work. Computer skills, using software for managing responsibilities such as data monitoring, generation of reports, records, etc. Ability to obtain appropriate permits from the Center for Disease Control/United States Department of Agriculture for those materials requiring such permits. PhD in relevant scientific field and certification as a Biological Safety Professional preferred. Laboratory research experience considered important.
