Design Engineer

Our client is a world-leading developer of a wide range of medical devices for use in the surgical market, including implantables, powered machinery, and complex electro-mechanical surgical hand tools and equipment.  Currently, they are seeking qualified individuals to join their product development team working on the next generation of their product lines.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE:  Design Engineer

 

DEPARTMENT: R&D

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Under minimal supervision designs, develops, modifies and evaluates electronic and/or mechanical components assemblies or subsystems for mechanical and/or Electro-mechanical medical devices.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1. Will determine and implement design approaches and parameters and conduct feasibility studies on new designs.

2. Will analyze equipment to establish operating data, conduct experimental tests and evaluate the results.

3. Will select components and equipment based on analysis of specifications, reliability and regulatory requirements.

4. Will aid in the development process by ensuring designs are cost efficient, manufacturable and reliable.

5. May assist in evaluating vendor capability to support development.

6. Will submit periodic reports on assigned topics to supervisor.

7. May interact, telephonically, with customers to resolve product issues.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

?  May coordinate activities of one or more employees.

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

?  Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, etc. Generally involves sitting most of the time.

?  Must have the ability to work with and assemble small objects and component parts.

?  Ability to operate common office equipment (e.g. calculator, PC, telephone, etc.) and common measuring devices (e.g. micrometers, calipers, voltmeters, etc.).

?  Must have good visual acuity and demonstrate fine motor skills.

 

MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

?  Must be able to observe and correct minute inconsistencies (e.g. in the printed word, product appearance, etc.).

?  Must be able to generate, follow and explain detailed instructions and design parameters.

?  Must be able to complete detailed documentation accurately.

?  Must be able to analyze and correct complex product design issues of a moderate scope using independent judgement.

 

SKILLS REQUIRED:

 

?  Excellent analytical skills.

?  Effective interpersonal communication skills.

?  Demonstrated ability to operate small hand tools (e.g. pliers, screwdrivers, hammer, wrenches, etc.), power tools and test/inspection equipment.

?  Demonstrated mechanical/electrical problem solving skills.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

 

?  0-4 years related design engineering experience.

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:

 

?  B.S. in mechanical or electrical engineering or related curriculum.

?  Working knowledge of ProE, CAD or solid modeling
