The Instrumentation Development Director is responsible for the coordinated management of the development of one or more large instrumentation systems. The Instrumentation Development Director works with other Project Leaders (who are responsible for the execution of their project and its impact on the program) to monitor cost, schedule, and technical performance of component projects and operations, while working to ensure the ultimate success of the program. The Instrumentation Development Director is generally responsible for leading all aspect of the program from determining and coordinating the sharing of resources among projects to the determining of the requirements for the instrument system. The Instrumentation Development Director is responsible for stakeholder management and interacts with senior managers, executives, and major stakeholders to establish strategic plans, objectives, and metrics for the instrumentation development program.

The Instrumentation Development Director works directly with project teams and project leaders and Project Management Analysts to provide the direction and coordination of activities to all assigned projects to ensure that project goals are accomplished within prescribed time frame and within the project budget.? In addition, they are responsible for assisting with communicating project status and progress, based on project timelines, to project leaders and to the Program Management Office.?? They will assemble written plans, track project performance and completion, assist with meeting minutes, project agendas, track milestones, maintain a financial landscape of the project, estimate and calculate project delays.? The Instrumentation Development Director will ensure alignment between other project plans and business and scientific objectives, and track completion of planned activities. The Instrumentation Development Director report project exception for their assigned instrumentation development program(s) and calculating costs for delay.? The Instrumentation Development Director will assist project leaders with project definition and initiation, including producing project timelines for new projects, and, is responsible for communicating project exceptions and project decisions to Executive Management.

The Instrumentation Development Director also acts as a mentor or technical resource on the project team.? They will be able to schedule activities to meet time requirements and move one or more projects forward simultaneously without compromising quality.

The Instrumentation Development Director is expected to be responsible for, and pprovide expertise and consistency in several areas of project management as defined within the Program Management Institute (PMI) Book of Standards.? In addition, the Instrumentation Development Director will provide expert assistance and analysis to cross-departmental teams with the aim to improve the efficiency of the organization.

The Instrumentation Development Director will initiate, plan, manage, and perform or have performed highly complex processes and be able to analyze results, and understand subsequent activities with minimal to no direct input from their supervisor. Activities will be performed with a complete grasp and understanding of the area, which should lead to key insights and appropriate conclusions. It is expected that the Instrumentation Development Director will seek new techniques and processes within a particular discipline and will incorporate them into daily routines as needed. The Instrumentation Development Director will spend considerable time interacting directly with other departments within the organization, and is expected to sit on project teams as a stakeholder.? The Instrumentation Development Director must have a deep understanding and appreciation of the functions and responsibilities of other departments in the organization and how their interrelationships affect the development and commercialization of products.
The Instrumentation Development Director will have extensive knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within diverse fields and will fully understand the development processes that lead from product concept to product commercialization including, regulatory, manufacturing, quality, and sales and marketing considerations. The Instrumentation Development Director relies on advanced experience and judgment to initiate, plan, and accomplish goals and will be asked to perform a variety of tasks that rely on leadership and a high level of creativity to complete goals. The Instrumentation Development Director will quickly recognize when they need assistance in their professional activities and will promptly seek out appropriate advice and assistance from their supervisor or from well-validated known sources.? The Instrumentation Development Director must have outstanding people skills and have demonstrated skill in consistently working with these different and diverse groups of people in an effective, professional, and highly productive manner.? The Instrumentation Development Director will have a strong track record in leading instrumentation development programs in the IVD industry.?
The Instrumentation Development Director will have a strong track record in establishing productive professional relationships with other leaders, planning project processes, defining deliverables, and detailing commercialization activities.? The Instrumentation Development Director has also created a product or process that has had a substantial impact in the success of and organization.? The key differentiating characteristics between other Program Manager positions and the Instrumentation Development Director are:? years of experience, depth of experience, focus of experience on Instrumentation development, documented and proven ability to manage processes and projects, multi-tasking at a high level, and a track record of creating a successful product or process.?
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (key tasks required to be performed by the incumbent):
Minimum Essential Duties and Responsibilities for the Instrumentation Development Director:Learn and follow all safety procedures 5%Write reports, assessments, and project documentation as required.? Manage corporate and project metrics as needed. 35-55%Supervisory responsibilities, including leading project teams (mainly focused, but not limited to product development-based intradepartmental projects or business processes) 40-60%
A.????????? SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:? The Instrumentation Development Director is expected to supervise Scientific Associates, Scientists, Project Management Analysts I and Project Management Analysts II, and R&D and Program Managers in daily operations, training, or in a team setting, which may through indirect mentoring and instruction, or, directly in a large team.
B.????????? EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE (minimum education level and years of experience required to meet the expectations of the position):
1.?????? A minimum of a BA or BS degree in a related technical field( Engineering, Physics or Life Science) is required.? Individuals with this background must have a minimum of 10+ years of work related experience serving on project teams as a leader, mentor, or supervisory role. Formal training in project management is considered a plus.? Advanced degrees are preferred.
2.?????? Candidates for this experience must have led the completion of at least one instrumentation system development.
