 POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

As part of the Marketing Team, the Medical Science Liaison will plan, develop, implement and manage scientific communications and publication strategies for designated products/programs, from the research phase through post-launch phase for the life of the products/programs.

 

Communicates and coordinates with internal departments, including marketing team, R&D and Product Development, Chief Scientific Officer, Regulatory, Office and Key Opinion Leaders (KOL) and professional societies to drive scientific communications to achieve the commercial objectives. 

 

Manages Investigator-Initiated Trials Program to ensure regulatory compliance, support of investigators and to optimize outcomes.

 

Participates on multi-functional/multi-divisional teams responsible for the targeted business/product initiatives, and/or product development programs.

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

1.  Develops and executes the worldwide scientific/clinical communications and publications strategy for new product entry and existing products/programs within the agreed timeframe and budget.

2.  Oversees and develops and/or edits effective scientific, clinical, and promotional resources, e.g., oral presentations, posters, symposiums, abstracts, manuscripts, internal medical meetings, publications, and product communications (e.g., monographs).

3.  Works with Marketing, Chief Scientific Officer, and R&D to develop integrated communications strategy for product positioning, medical economics and market messaging that supports brand development.

4.  Provide input on clinical studies that support commercialization objectives and brand development.  Identifies potential investigators.

5.  Acts as liaison between Investigators and company to identify and facilitate Investigator-Initiated Trials (IITs) including submission, review and approval.  Supports Investigator through IIT process from proposal to publication.

6.  Defines the strategic need for scientific/clinical symposia and other events in support of the product and commercialization plans.  Oversees the implementation of the approved programs.

7.  Establishes strong working relationships with KOL, professional organizations, patient advocacy groups, professional societies, working/user groups, advisors, medical education societies, etc., to build an effective network of product champions.

8.  Works with external experts to ensure publications/clinical claims lead to incorporation into society practice guidelines.

9.  Gathers and disseminates competitive intelligence from multiple sources with summary of key points.  Creates and maintains database of competitive intelligence.

10.  Creates and manages scientific communications information systems/ archive (technical, competitive, product) for assigned products/programs.

11.  Assumes a leadership role in proactively identifying new product claims/opportunities to fuel sales growth.

12.  Manages all financial and contractual aspects of assigned projects.

13.  Provides input into the Product Requirement Document (PRD) and other requirements as part of the product development process.

14.  Will assume other strategic/tactical duties and responsibilities as assigned by Director.

JOB DIMENSIONS: 

 Revenue, operating budget, strategic planning, communications strategy. Travel required, ~ 35%.

 

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SPECIFIC SKILLS REQUIRED:Advanced Scientific degree (PhD, PharmD, M.D) preferred.Bachelors Degree in Communications, Journalism, Science, Nursing, Pharmacy or related field required, MBA preferred.Minimum of 5 years in scientific communications with a focus in medical diagnostics and/or oncology, and an overall 10 years in pharmaceuticals/diagnostics or other relevant field.Minimum of 3 years experience in clinical research (clinical trial design, logistics and evaluation).Knowledge of principles of medical economics preferred.Minimum 2 years Product Management experience.  Proficient in strategic planning, budgeting, market research, messaging and positioning of diagnostic products, platforms, programs.Demonstrated experience in diverse team environment, including coordination, problem solving, conflict resolution and consensus building skills. Excellent problem solving ability, strong negotiation skills, and organizational skills.Expert interpersonal, verbal, written, presentation and platform communication skills.Highly articulate and persuasive during formal and informal presentations; able to convey complex scientific ideas fluently to any audience.Proficient in MicroSoft? Office Suite products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Projects).Demonstrated experience in managing multiple tasks in a compressed time frame. Utilization of project management software desirable.

 

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE OR SKILLS: Have established and strong working relationships with KOL, professional societies, government agencies, medical education companies and/or patient advocacy groups.Have published studies in the public domain.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

 

Potential to supervise additional people as required.
