Microbiologist - Phoenix

POSITION INFORMATION:
Functions as a microbiologist performing a variety of molecular (particularly PCR) and biological tests to rapidly identify and characterize the presence of pathogenic microorganisms/agents considered high hazard biological threats. In addition to performing tests/assays, the position is also responsible for the following.
? Assuring that incoming specimens are recorded, processed and triaged appropriately while maintaining ?chain-of-custody?. Processing environmental air filter samples to extract DNA.
? Applying knowledge of these advanced molecular techniques and microbiological procedures to appropriately interpret and report the findings of the assays.
? Maintaining documentation on findings and protocols.
? Ensuring that reagents, supplies and equipment are adequately maintained.
? Providing laboratory support for field responses and investigations as assigned by the supervisor.
? Work in other sections of the laboratory as directed, when assigned primary laboratory duties are completed.
? Work in Microbiology, Virology and Emergency Preparedness and Response Laboratories as it relates to public health preparedness and emerging infectious diseases.
The position:Is responsible for 24 hour 7 days a week coverage for laboratory responses during a BT event as directed by the supervisor. Requires work on weekends and holidays as directed by the supervisor. Routinely works past 5 p.m. and works approximately 2 weekends per month, or as directed by the supervisor. Requires passing a law enforcement background check.Requires registration with the CDC Select Agent Program and passing of a Department of Justice background check.May require United States of America SECRET clearance.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
BS or BA in Microbiology or closely related field or MT from an accredited college or university.One year laboratory bench experience in microbiology, virology, biochemistry or, a closely allied field.Experience performing real-time PCR and working in a BSL-3 environment are desirable.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of established scientific methods and techniques of microbiology to perform recurring assignments of moderate difficulty (i.e., the methods and techniques are well established, apply to most situations encountered and do not require significant deviation from established methods) or discrete portions of more complex projects.
Necessary knowledge and background include:Knowledge of the agents of bioterrorism.Knowledge of biohazard regulations in the proper and safe handling and transport of materials containing virulent and pathogenic disease agents and toxicants.Knowledge of Chain-of-custody regulations and procedures.Knowledge of computer systems, methods and applications, including word processing, statistical and data management software packages.
Desirable skills include:One year bench experience in a laboratory performing molecular and/or microbiological and/or virology assays (includes aseptic methods, BSL2 and BSL3 techniques).Skill in the use of laboratory instrumentation related to cellular and molecular biology.Skill in performing and interpreting the results of research or diagnostic PCR testing (includes Nucleic acid extraction methodology, set up and analyses of real time PCR assays, detection and determination of DNA contamination events). Skill in the application of diagnostic laboratory principles and procedures.Skill in maintaining Quality Assurance and Quality Control documentation and organizational records to ensure adequate reagents and materials for 24/7 operation.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The supervisor defines assignment objectives, priorities, and deadlines. The scientist independently plans and carries out assignments, and resolves problems in accordance with accepted practices. Completed work is reviewed for technical soundness, appropriateness, and conformance with policy and objectives.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires no special physical demands. It may involve some walking, standing, bending, or carrying of light items. The incumbent may be required to wear a respirator when performing certain tasks.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is performed in a microbiology laboratory under either BSL 2 or 3, as appropriate. The samples may contain highly lethal pathogens. The location of employment is the Bureau of State Laboratory Services, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Incumbent shall follow all biosafety and biosecurity guidelines related to the testing program. This position places the incumbent at risk of potential exposure to Hepatitis B, as well as other pathogenic microbes and viruses.
SALARY1 & BENEFITS
The salary for this position ranges from $31,574 to $47,879 annually. Also included is a full compliment of benefits including paid vacation, medical, dental, vision and life insurance, and a company supported retirement plan.
1Incumbent will be entitled to additional pay for working overtime and holidays.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The incumbent must successfully complete a six-month probationary period.Term of employment is dependent upon continued contract funding from the Federal Government.
