Postdoctoral Associate

Nevada Cancer Institute (NVCI) is the official cancer institute for the State of Nevada. NVCI?s mission is to develop a comprehensive cancer research institute staffed by the finest scientists, clinicians and caregivers, to provide hope for the community through research, prevention, detection, education, support and patient-centered care by striving for a future without cancer through innovative translational research in basic, clinical and population science. A non-profit organization, NVCI opened a 142,000 square foot flagship research and care facility in the Summerlin district of Las Vegas that opened in September 2005.

 

Position Summary:  Conduct research on the role of protein kinases in the regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis and metastasis of cancer cells and stem cells.  Test new protein kinase inhibitors as potential anti-cancer agents.

 

Essential Responsibilities:  Design, conduct and analyze experiments designed to elucidate the role of protein kinase signaling pathways in the regulation of apoptosis, cell proliferation and migration (metastasis in cancer cells and homing in bone marrow stromal stem cells).  Help develop new protein kinase inhibitors (specific for one kind of protein kinase) as potential anti-cancer agents.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1)  Ph.D. degree with a research background in molecular pharmacology or molecular biology.

2)  Must have expertise in analytical chemistry and quantitative methods of measuring intracellular protein phosphorylation and in vitro protein kinase assays. 

3)  Preference will be give to individuals with experience measuring apoptosis and cell proliferation.

4)  Must be self motivated and career oriented to join an exciting highly interactive research team focused on signal transduction research related to cancer and stem cell biology.

5)  Publication record in leading peer-reviewed journal

6)  Must demonstrate potential to obtain extramural funding

1)  Physical:  Must be able to conduct bench research using analytical and molecular biology techniques (with a passion for quality work).

2)  Mental:  Must be flexible in a demanding environment.  Must be able to work overtime when requested.  Ability to prioritize and use excellent judgment.
