This position is responsible for assisting the Environmental Health and Safety department with duties required to maintain compliance with Federal, State and local regulations. Key functions include serving as the main hazardous waste technician, collecting hazardous waste from laboratories and bulk into 55-gallon drums, segregating chemicals for lab packs and working with hazardous waste vendors to coordinate pick-ups, prepare manifests, etc. Involves ensuring RCRA compliance with Large Quantity Generator program, collecting infectious waste and supporting radiation safety program through collecting, surveying and releasing waste, checking in radioactive materials packages, etc. This position will also be relied on to conduct routine safety audits, file paper work, and perform other functions in support of the EH&S department. Ultimately, the goal will be to provide all employees with a safe and healthy work environment.

 

Responsibilities:Maintain Hazardous Waste, Infectious Waste, Radioactive Waste, and Universal Waste programs.Conduct weekly RCRA inspections of hazardous waste collection area and prepare for LQG status.Receive radioactive materials shipments and maintain the running radioactive materials inventory.Coordinate the collection and management of radioactive waste for decay and/or disposal. Manage chemical inventory and MSDS program as per relevant regulations.Organize department records (training, manifests, audits, etc.).Assist in the performance of health & safety audits internally for laboratories.Follow SOPs and necessary documentation for equipment and procedures. Participate as a member of the Emergency Response Team. Support EHS by maintaining records and filing system.Oversee remediation of chemical, radioactive and biohazardous spills.Practice and demonstrate awareness of all safety guidelines and standards.  Perform technical functions for all safety committees.

 

Requirements:Bachelor?s degree in a relevant field and/or relevant professional training and certifications.  2+ years of EH&S experience in a laboratory environment.  Strong chemical background and fluent knowledge of relevant hazardous waste regulations.  Current certification of hazardous materials and emergency response training under OSHA (29 CFR 1910.120) preferred. Knowledge of Federal, State and local regulations. Ability to read and follow existing SOPs and create new SOPs as needed.  Ability to perform job requirements independently with minimal supervision and interact well with all levels of laboratory personnel.  Ability to lift up to 40 pounds on a daily basis and move full 55-gallon drums.  Ability to wear a respirator and familiarity with Respirator Protection Program Requirements.  Excellent verbal/written communication skills.  Desire to work in a team environment.Strong computer experience (spreadsheets, word processing, databases, etc.) desired.
