IT SYSTEM TECHNOLOGIST

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Provide systems and application support in a research and advanced development environment.
* Excellent problem solving, troubleshooting and oral/written communication skills required.
* Provides technical support that includes but is not limited to: application software installation and license management, development and maintenance of proprietary tools,configuration/installation/support of alpha and beta versions of hardware and software products (including GNU and Open Source tools for SPARC/X86/Solaris and Linux-based systems).
* Provides diagnostic support for Sun hardware at the FRU level, LAN equipment that includes but is not limited to switches, routers, and hubs.
* All work is performed within a large, diverse computing environment that supports domestic and international staff.
* Develop metrics for evaluating and tools as necessary to improve the computing environment for Sun Labs.
* Must interact with both Sun Labs projects and IT staff on the troubleshooting and diagnosis of problems, implementing workarounds and fixes, and tracking resolution.
* Manage internal inventory of capital equipment and other misc. computer and networking equipment and supplies for the server room and offices.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
* Web page creation/maintenance (HTML/XML/TWIKI), PC (Windows and LINUX)security and application support, and Mac.
* OSX security and application support experience all a plus.
* Network switch/router/firewall security configuration best practices experience also a plus.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
* Must have excellent Solaris systems administration skills and understanding of Solaris Operating environment.
* Ability to write/develop scripts and tools to facilitate the work environment.
* Experience in the installation, compilation, configuration and support of Open Source and third party software, including license managers and software distribution systems highly desirable.
* Comfortable providing hardware maintenance (FRU part replacement) within installed system hardware.
* Capable of installation and configuration of Solaris OS and applications and tracking of patches.
* Some Linux, Mac. OSX and Windows experience a plus.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE:
* Basic programming skills (e.g., shell scripts, perl, C and/or Java) comfort with general networking concepts (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, NIS, configuring routers, switches, etc.) as well as diagnostic tools and techniques (e.g., packet sniffers, traceroute).
* Experience with network storage products a plus.
* Experience with Foundry and Cisco network equipment a plus.
* Specific experience or certification on Solstice Disksuite, Sun Cluster, Java Enterprise System a strong plus.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: 5+
MINIMUM LEVEL OF EDUCATION: BS or equivalent
FIELD OF STUDY: Computer Science
ADDITIONAL COURSE WORK: IT, Networking, MCSE, Linux
