ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
? Assists in planning, scheduling, assigning and reviewing the work of a crew of Digital Systems Technicians engaged in the installation, testing, maintenance, modification, and repair of CSU/DSU, routers, switches, telephony, VoIP applications, PC, servers, modems, line cables, interfaces, circuits and supporting peripheral communications equipment.
? Performs the more difficult testing, maintenance, and repair assignments associated with LAN/WAN networks, routers, switches, servers, telephony, circuits, VoIP communication systems and equipment.
? Receives and analyzes trouble calls and dispatches technicians, giving pertinent information and necessary instruction, and follows up to ensure that problems are resolved.
? Assists in advising County departments? representatives on the operation, installation, repair, maintenance or modification of LAN/WAN, and VoIP communication systems.
? Assists in establishing maintenance and testing procedures and schedules, and ensures that they are followed.
? Trains technicians in the repair and operation of routers, switches and LAN/WAN equipment, computers and computer systems, and provides technical guidance in troubleshooting the more sophisticated equipment down to the component level.
? Coordinates and participates in various meetings with County and vendor repair groups in order to resolve problems or issues related to network problems communications.
VACANCY INFORMATION
The eligible list established as a result of this examination will be used to fill vacancies in the Customer Assistance Division of the Internal Services Department. Appointees may be required to work any shift, including overtime, evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays.
selection REQUIREMENTS
Four years? experience in the installation, testing which includes troubleshooting and monitoring, maintenance and repair of computer and LAN/WAN network equipment, telephony application and equipment, modems, and associated peripheral communication equipment at the level of a Digital Systems Technician* in the service of Los Angeles County.
LICENSE: A valid California Class ?C? Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
VISION: Color perception must be normal other than for a minor hue impairment (mild as records on AO H-R-R Pseudoisochromatic or similar plates). Applicants who show other than normal or minor hue impairment may be tested, at the discretion of the Director of Personnel, with sample color-coded electric wires.
REQUIREMENT INFORMATION
*Experience at the level of the County of Los Angeles Class of Digital Systems Technician refers to experience performing in the installation, testing, maintenance, modification and repairs of digital communication systems and equipment.
PHYSICAL CLASS: ?3? Moderate. This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting of objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
TECHNICAL
? Experience in complex testing, including troubleshooting, monitoring, maintenance, and repair, of VoIP communication systems, applications and equipment.
? Experience in the installation, testing, maintenance, modification, repair, monitoring and troubleshooting of CSU/DSU, routers, PBX switches, PC, servers, and circuits.
? Experience in the installation, operation, testing, maintenance, repair and modification of electronic and digital equipment using the following equipment and tools such as SNIFFER, OBSERVER, T-BERD, IP SUBNETTING, TCP/IP, IPX, SOLARWIND, PACKETSHAPER, and MRTG.
? Working knowledge of software such as CISCOWORKS, CISCO INFORMATION CENTER, OPENVIEW, CONCORD, NETCOOL, NETSCOUT, SITE MANAGER, and NETVIEW; hardware such as mainframe, server, and probes; and systems such as Windows 2000, XP, UNIX, WINDOWS, and IBM.

examination information
This examination will consist of two parts. PART I ? A rating of record evaluating the scope of your training and experience based on your application information weighted 30%. PART II ? An oral interview covering training, experience, personal fitness and the general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted at 70%. Candidates must achieve an overall score of 70 or higher on both parts to pass this examination.
No person may compete for this examination more than once every six (6) months.
ELIGIBLE Register INFORMATION
The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the Eligible Register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation. Passing this examination and being placed on the Eligible Register do not guarantee an offer of employment.
SPECIAL INFORMATION
A thorough background investigation (including fingerprint search) will be required of candidates. Candidates who are found to be unsuitable for employment, as a Senior Digital Systems Technician, will be removed from the certification list pursuant to Civil Service Rule 6.04.
DISQUALIFYING FACTORS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
? Felony convictions
? Certain job-related misdemeanor convictions
? Certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (e.g. 4 or more moving violations within the past 2 years, failure to appear, at-fault accidents and driving under the influence).
? Illegal use of certain controlled substances.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: All ISD employees are fingerprinted and subject to a criminal background check by the State and Federal Departments of Justice.
