SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR

SUMMARY:   Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, provides all computer support to the operation of the law office.  Analyzes, recommends and implements automation functions in the law office including, but not limited to, the networks, accounting, litigation support, and databases at the direction of the Information Technology Manager.

Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate in person and by phone with a diverse group of clients, attorneys and staff and provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact.

PLANNING AND ORGANIZING:

Maintains the computer room facility and administers the network and the computer operating systems. 

On the central systems, diagnoses problems and installs software. 

Makes repairs or coordinates repairs with the central system maintenance vendor(s). 

On the networked peripherals, diagnoses problems, makes repairs, and installs hardware and software.

Administers the network security systems and ensures protection of data and system files by utilizing effective backup, archiving and security systems. 

Assists in and makes recommendations regarding the development of such systems.

Maintains records and provides documentation for computer methods, programs, systems, hardware and software sufficient to provide effective user support and maintenance of the central systems.

Keeps abreast of new equipment and software and makes recommendations regarding upgrades and improvements to systems to maintain peak performance.

 

TEAM BUILDING AND COORDINATION:

Provides ongoing support for all application programs as they are approved for purchase.

Will work closely with users who are having problems, usually in their offices on their equipment.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

KNOWLEDGE:

?  Is knowledgeable about the cable plant and network design and is able to locate and diagnose problems on a timely basis, both hardware and software.

?  Capable of relocating and changing communications and peripheral equipment and cabling as it becomes necessary.

?  At the direction of the Information Technology Manager, coordinates other repairs with outside service groups.

?2 to 5 years of progressively responsible work experience as a hardware or software technician.

?  Technical knowledge of computer science, information systems, programming and electronics as normally acquired through an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a computer- or technology-related field or equivalent experience.

 

SKILLS:

Provides ongoing support for all application programs as they are approved for purchase.  Works closely with users who are having problems, usually in their offices on their equipment.  Develops in-house applications of modest complexity. Ability to recognize and solve business computer problems, including data entry errors, hardware failures, policy adherence problems, data collection errors and to analyze workflow and system requirements in order to help formulate procedures and policies.

Technical skills and ability to support a medium-sized information systems operation, including knowledge of hardware and operating system, database management, spreadsheet, word processor and communication software currently in use.

 

ABILITY:

?  Ability to transport, install and maintain electronic information processing equipment such as microcomputers, laser printers, modems and wiring panels, including component (circuit board, disk drive, power supply) installation.

?  This requires occasional transportation of devices in excess of 50 pounds and the installation of various pieces of equipment at the users' desks and in the computer room and wiring closets.

?  Work may require more than 40 hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position; may require irregular hours with no notice.Will be required to carry a pager and to respond to calls from users and other Information Technology staff.
