System Support Specialist
The Columbia University Press, an affiliate of Columbia University, is seeking a Systems Support Specialist (PC / IBM midrange server) to provide user support on desktops, laptops, servers, and applications common to the publishing industry. The ideal candidate for this position will be an ambitious college graduate with some IT experience in the publishing industry.
Description:
Position is located in Columbia University Press? administrative / warehouse environment in Irvington, NY. Intermittent travel to the Press? main office in Manhattan possible. End user support for hardware, software, and network issues in a non-profit, academic / scholarly publishing organization. Hardware consists of Windows machines running various operating systems including XP and 2000 Professional. Windows applications include those common to the publishing industry such as MS Office 2000/3, IBM AS400 client software, etc? Network is primarily 10/100mb Ethernet and 802.11x with various T1 connections between offices.
The Irvington location supports the Press? financial and distribution functions and is significantly dependent upon IBM iSeries server running OS400 v5.3 and an application known as Bookmaster. Additional functionality of the iSeries includes BI and connectivity with Filemaker Pro Server. Strong knowledge in RPG and SQL is therefore highly desired.
Responsibilities:Software / hardware installations, troubleshooting, and OS migrations or updates.Test, diagnose, and resolve problems related to hardware, OS, application, and network.Ensure issues are resolved in a timely manner while maintaining a high level of customer service.Setup and troubleshoot local and network printers. Knowledge of network connected multi-function devices (e.g. copiers / printers / scanners) highly desired.When necessary, act as liaison to service representatives to resolve problems.
Qualifications:Skilled in diagnosing, identifying, and resolving problems related to hardware and software. Experience working on a Windows centric local area network, preferably in a publishing environment.Ability to quickly comprehend and master new hardware and software technologies.Proven track record of providing quality support.Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must have the ability to conceptualize and interpret user issues and provide resolutions in a timely manner. Must have the ability to work with users of all levels of skills and abilities.Knowledge of Local Area Network equipment, Windows 2003 Server, Active Directory.Excellent understanding of TCP/IP protocol and Internet standards including mail (POP/IMAP/SMTP), file transfer (FTP/SFTP), web servers, security.In depth knowledge of various software applications, including MS Windows 2K/XP, the MS Office Suite. Knowledge of Filemaker Pro, Access, and SQL desirable.High degree of service orientation, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
