Amazon.com Network Engineer
Amazon.com is seeking a qualified Network Engineer for their Global Systems and Network Operations Center located in Seattle, Washington. The ideal candidate will be expected to provide quality first-tier networking management for our worldwide operations on a variety of platforms. He/she will also demonstrate a strong knowledge of common network protocols and have experience with participating in operational support for a large-scale enterprise environment. Progression into a Mid-Level Network Engineer position is expected within twelve to eighteen months. A love for working with new technologies and pushing the envelope on existing technology is required.
Primary Qualifications
Must have a strong foundation centered around operational support for Cisco networking devices as well as a basic understanding of the linux systems platform. Must also possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to interact well with peers, internal customers and vendors as necessary. A degree in Computer Science or at least three years’ relevant experience in a large-scale technical operations environment is required.
The successful candidate will be familiar with some or all of the following network protocols: TCP, Spanning Tree, BGP, OSPF, HSRP, GLBP, PIM, IGMP, IPsec, ISAKMP, DNS, and HTTP. Basic knowledge of network architecture and/or topology is also preferred.
The ability to program in Perl, shell, or C is highly desired.
Responsibilities
Network Support
Follow standard practices and procedures to install, configure, support, monitor, maintain and troubleshoot the Amazon.com global network for critical networked systems including routers, switches, load balancers and firewalls.
Diagnosis of network performance issues on linux hosts, from single point-to-point connectivity to large-scale routing configuration issues.
Provide critical on-call technical support to Amazon.com internal customers, including Software Development and Systems Engineers.
Coordinate with vendors or partners to report issues, open trouble tickets and drive problems to resolution.
Participate in making suggestions and decisions involving complex problem resolution, which will be reviewed by higher-level Network Engineers. Includes drawing upon existing defined decision guidelines to make educated recommendations to peers and business.
Interface with customers to communicate system requirements and/ or necessary modifications to their services in order to create a fully-supportable environment.
Ability to play a role in aspects of a larger project. Able to report status of project progress in timely and accurate fashion using available metrics.
Participation in entry level interviewing.
Company-wide Event Management
Provide monitoring support for all tier one customer-facing services
Diagnosis of large-scale events
Conference call management utilizing an established Event Management process
Collaboration with level two and level-three resolvers
Identification and troubleshooting of recurring platform issues. Escalation of same to mid- and senior-level engineering teams for full resolution
Engagement of disparate resolver teams to resolve application/platform interaction issues
Creation of documentation regarding recurring issues, new standard operating procedures, knowledge transfer material, etc.
Other Requirements 2+ years industry experience
College degree preferred
Physical requirements: The ability to sit in front of computer for entire scheduled 12-hour shift while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail. Ability to move and lift computer equipment.
