UNIX Administrator

TITLE: UNIX Administrator

Reports to the Manager of UNIX Administration.

Primary Responsibilities: Execute University?s datacenter backup policy utilizing CommVault QiNetix (Galaxy), off-site storage strategy. Install, configure and test UNIX software including operating systems and application software. Maintain up-to-date documentation on configurations, operational procedures and hardware and software inventories. Troubleshoot, diagnose and correct operating and system performance problems. Provide support for the University?s Internet connection and for all internetworking between the University and sites external to the campus. Work with Network Operations and Systems Administration Team to maintain the integrity of UNIX systems security. Implement and monitor user access control methods. Prepare reports on UNIX system usage, operations and performance. Install, configure and maintain network systems such as DNS, Email, DHCP, RADIUS, etc. Other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate must have a minimum of three years related UNIX/Linux Administration. A Bachelor?s Degree in Computer Science or related field is preferred. Experience with CommVault QiNetix (Galaxy) or similar backup system desirable. Linux-based certifications highly desirable (LPI, RHCT or RHCE). Must be familiari with networked/distributed computing environment concepts (e.g. NIS, NFS, DNS). Must understand the Internet?s DNS system and the organizations which control it. Ability to write complete shell-level scripts (including complete error-checking/handling) required. Familiarity with a programming language (e.g. C/C++) and LAMP platforms necessary. Must possess a good understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; understand paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what device drivers do, file system concepts ("inode", "superblock") and system-level firewalls (e.g. iptables). A solid understanding of computer architecture and peripheral devices (RAID, big-endian vs. little-endian, SMP vs. NUMA, etc). Must have ability to focus in on a problem quickly and find the best solution. Must be able to treat any confidential and sensitive information appropriately. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills required.
