Director, Applications Development

 

The Director is responsible for managing all aspects of current Front End software development.  The Director will manage Chicago-based and India-based development teams. Project work will consist of initiatives supporting product teams throughout Travelport?s Global Online Business.

 

The Applications Development team is responsible for delivering the MVC for the web application tier for consumer and corporate travel web sites. Director will also provide leadership in evolving team to support new business models and applications with rollout of new Travelport Technology Platform. The technologies currently used by the team include Java, semantic mark-up, Java Server Pages, DHTML, JavaScript and CSS.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Responsible for leading a development team engaged in web application layer development. The front end applications team is a shared resource team which participates in all aspects of the software development life cycle.Understand, advocate and communicate company objectives, vision and strategy to staff and senior management.Act as Subject Matter Expert in cross functional meetings providing the necessary direction from a software engineering perspective.Make presentations both to internal as well as external customers.Partner with other functional groups to assess potential technology synergies.Recognizes and identifies potential areas where existing policies and procedures require change, or where new ones need to be developed for future business expansion.Directs and controls activities of staff to accomplish business objectives for specific projects.Provide status reporting to senior management for active projects.Plan and execute staff development activities and training.Sets staffing needs and develops recruiting strategy that is aligned with meeting business objectives.Assigns project responsibilities to team members based on areas of expertise and proficiency.Conducts evaluations of staff and provides necessary career paths for team members growth.Develop, execute and report software engineering plan as well as architect and implement design specifications as required.Responsible for fostering teamwork, motivating and coaching staff. Solicits feedback from peers on performance.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 BS/MS or related work experience.10+ years software development experience with at least 5 - 8 years software engineering management experience.Strong working knowledge of Java, JSP, DHTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Semantic markup.Strong project management skills with the ability to multi-task.Previous experience in an Internet E-commerce site, or start up environment preferred.Excellent strategic thinker with superior verbal and written communication skills.Proven track record including planning and successfully executing large-scale development projects. Strong awareness of competitive technology or travel industry environments.Demonstrated record of strong leadership and motivational skills resulting in high retention and morale within their teams.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Strong presentation skills required
