Director of Applications
Director of Applications
Responsible for all central software systems used to run the business, including custom and off-the-shelf systems.
- Work with headquarters and field department users to understand their requirements.
- When off the shelf systems are determined to be the best solution to an issue, work with vendors to evaluate and select products. Responsible for installing, configuring and converting to these products.
- When custom software is determined to be the best solution, work with programmers to develop the solution, and work with users to roll out and implement the solution.
- Understand the technologies behind all our software systems and be able to troubleshoot problems
- Work with management team to set priorities on projects, based on time to implement and value to the business
- Work with Infrastructure team to ensure that applications are well integrated with and supported by server/network environment.
- Manage staff of 2 senior programmers and 1 user support/training position.
-----------------------------------
Our business is highly automated, and our software systems are critical to every facet of the operation.
The primary system is a custom application (called "GoBase") that includes features to support sales force automation, marketing, time and billing of our consulting force, our network operation center, etc. It is constantly changing as the company changes, and is supported by two full-time programmers. Both have been with the company for many years and are extremely familiar with every facet of this system. Both work from their homes, one in Japan and one in Sacramento. They work from little written specifications, add signficant value to the design and implementation of new features, and release code that requires very little testing.
This system is a Microsoft-technology Web application, including SQL Server 2000 (moving to SQL 2005 soon), Active Server Pages in VB Script, and a fair amount of JavaScript. It does not use .NET tools. Reporting is done via a SQL Server data warehouse and OLAP reporting services. It has integration points to most of our other systems, which include:
Solomon v6.0 for GL, AP and AR, running on SQL Server - integration via Visual Basic scripts and direct SQL-to-SQL programs
ADP Payroll - integration through text file exports
FAS for Fixed Asset tracking - integration through text file exports
Third-party ASP-based systems for Performance Management (employee reviews) and benefits tracking - integration through text exports
Sendmail on Red Hat Linux for email - integration via Perl scripts
Active Directory - integration via Visual Basic programs
The off-the-shelf systems run with few problems. The major role of this position re: these systems will be to troubleshoot issues, manage upgrades, ensure that the integration points continue to work, and find ways to improve the integration points where possible.
------------------------------------
The ideal candidate for this position will have many (15+) years experience designing, developing and rolling out custom applications for a wide variety of business customers. Knowledge of standard business accounting, payroll and HR systems is required.
Although the programmers do the bulk of the development of our systems, this is a hands-on position, and knowledge of SQL Server and the VB, Javascript and Transact-SQL languages (or similar languages and proven ability to learn these quickly) is critical for participating in development, rollout, day to day support, and troubleshooting of these systems.
On the other hand, this position is the primary point of interaction between users and the development team, and must be able to translate user requirements into system solutions.
