MTS-C Windows Services Administrator

SUMMARY:
The CERT Program? is part of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI), a federally funded research and development center at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. CERT engages in cutting-edge research and development, and provides robust training and education programs focused on ensuring that software developers, Internet security experts, network and system administrators, and others are able to resist, recognize, and recover from attacks on networked systems.

The CERT Infrastructure Group supports the Networked Systems Survivability Program- experts in Internet security, computer security improvement, and network survivability. We have a new position whose primary responsibilities are the integration of technologies used to create and administer information services and the administration of production Windows-based systems in a mixed platform environment. Desirable candidates will have:
?Experience managing production Windows servers used to support multiple mission-critical initiatives.
?Working knowledge of Microsoft enterprise technologies such as SQL Server, Exchange, et cetera.
?Thorough understanding of Active Directory, Group Policy, and Microsoft Software Installer (msi) tools.
?History participating in the entire lifecycle (planning, deployment, maintenance) of critical IT services.

Education/Training: BS in Computer Science, Information Science, Information Technology with eight (8) years experience; MS in Computer Science, Information Science, Information Technology with five (5) years experience; or PhD in Computer Science, Information Science, Information Technology with three years experiences. Candidates with a BS degree in other technical fields (e.g., engineering) will be considered as well if they have relevant work experience.

Experience: Eight (8) or more years of experience as a systems administrator in a high-availability production environment; at least twelve (12) contiguous months of said relevant experience served in the same organization evolving a specific infrastructure. Candidate *must* have experience in the secure deployment and on-going maintenance of Internet-facing Windows systems. Experience in the deployment, testing, and secure management of software using enterprise packaging and distribution techniques is required. The candidate will have experience in designing, deploying, and maintaining a multi-site Active Directory Infrastructure.

Skills/Abilities: A thorough understanding of Windows systems and related technologies (e.g. Active Directory, DFS, Group Policy). The candidate will have a working knowledge of at least one Windows scripting language (e.g. VBScript, Perl, etc). The ability to administer production Microsoft services in an enterprise environment. Candidate must understand the issues surrounding security of internal and external systems in a production environment and be able to discuss options in the context of a risk analysis of these systems. Experience using one or more Windows packaging tools (e.g. Installshield AdminStudio, Wise Package Studio) and a working knowledge of Windows Installer related technologies. Skills in advanced troubleshooting techniques such as crash dump analysis, registry and file system monitoring, and network sniffing.

Mobility: Some business travel required; may have to travel to other campus locations; travel to customer sites. Computer hardware installation and configuration required on a regular basis, sometimes involving transport of heavy objects (typically under 100 lbs.) short distances, use of hand tools, et cetera. Carrying of light objects (< 20 lbs.) for longer distances (intra-campus; 2-3 city blocks) may also be required.

Environmental Conditions: Work in an office setting for extended periods; periodic work in a computer machine room environment.

Mental: Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment; ability to prioritize projects/tasks; strong learning capability; ability to interact effectively with others of varying technical competency, vendors, managers, and other technical research staff; ability to work effectively with other groups within the SEI and Carnegie Mellon. Good technical problem-solving skills. Strong information and project organization skills as well as good oral and written communication skills are required.

Other: Evening/weekend hours may be required in order to perform service outside of normal operating hours. There is a rotating on-call component to this position ? average call volume is very light, about 3-5 calls/week. Candidate must be able to respond to outage events in the main facility in Pittsburgh, PA (Oakland) in a reasonable time (e.g. resolution within ~30 minutes).

Candidate must be able to pass a background check, obtain a security clearance, and be a U.S. citizen.
