Software Engineer - Speech and Natural Language

For over 50 years, the BBN name has been synonymous with technological innovation. Since implementing and operating the ARPANET, the forerunner of today's Internet, we have been responsible for a number of networking firsts: the first packet switch, the first router, and the first person-to-person network email. We also designed, built and operated the Defense Data Network. Today at BBN, some of the same scientists involved in those projects are working with the brilliant young graduates of the country's top technical schools to pioneer new innovations.

The Speech and Language Department at BBN has been a leader in the research, development, and application of speech and language technologies for over 30 years. We are involved in work ranging from advanced research and development to the fielding of applications, encompassing speech recognition, speaker identification and verification, speech coding, extraction of names from text, topic classification, question answering, audio monitoring and indexing, dialog processing, speech-to-speech translation, and multi-lingual optical character recognition (OCR). We perform professional services and license speech and language technologies, primarily to the US Government.

Speech/OCR Technology Scientists - All experience levels

Perform advanced research and development in the areas of speech and optical character recognition. Work in a team environment to develop and implement algorithms to advance the state of the art. Configure speech and language technology components for new languages and domains. Solve new language-specific and domain-dependent modeling problems. Develop software tools to improve the efficiency of data gathering, data annotation, and component/model configuration management.

Education: BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, or physics.

Qualifications: Strong software capabilities, with experience in C/C++, and an aptitude for scientific experimentation. Background in any of the following is a plus: probability and statistics, statistical modeling, pattern recognition, speech recognition, and language processing. Requires the ability to obtain a security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required); active clearance preferred.
