Sr. Research Engineer - Research Assignments Program

This role is part of the Engineering & Process Sciences Modeling group within Core R&D.  The purpose of this job is to serve as a leveraged resource in the application of numerical optimization to supply chain operations.  The clients served are primarily business supply chain groups, but may include manufacturing plants and other R&D departments.  The person may fill the role of subject matter expert on project teams or may serve as the project leader.  Opportunity identification is another important aspect of this job. 

 

This technology has shown substantial benefits.  Achieving and sustaining these gains in any process requires someone who can understand economic drivers, practical supply chain operations, the human dynamics of change, as well as advanced computer tools and techniques of modeling and optimization and the underlying mathematics.

 

Process modeling is the essential component of this job.  The incumbent will be responsible for leading others to a deeper understanding of their problem and process and representing this appropriately in a mathematical model. 

 

Implementation and delivering value are the critical success factors for this job.  The person must incorporate models into day to day business operations or major capital decisions.  Therefore the incumbent must successfully work with and influence a wide range of business personnel from the plant scheduler, to planner, to supply chain leader, to project leader.  Long-term value creation must be defined and supported by the client.

 

This position is sponsored by the Dow Research Assignments Program (RAP).RAP offers a 12-16 month window of opportunity for rotation among different businesses and locations, working on three to four projects at disparate research laboratories and pilots plants within the company.  Following the employee tenure in RAP, a permanent position will be established within R&D.



PhD in Chemical Engineering or Operations Research is required.

 

The ideal candidate for this job would have the intellectual capacity to think abstractly about a process, the mathematical knowledge to represent the process in equation form, the computer skills to learn and use a wide variety of simulation and optimization tools, and the people skills to drive change in client organizations.
