Estimator II

Estimator II Reporting Responsibility :  Reports directly to the Chief Estimator.

Estimating /Bid Process:

1. Prepare accurate quantity surveys and estimates for those divisions of the bid as assigned.

2. Complete assignments by due dates as indicated on the bid responsibility sheet.

3. Solicit subcontractor and/or supplier quotations or scheduling input as required for the assignments. Build relationships.

4. Participate in plan review and estimate reviews for respective projects bidding.

5. Assist in the compiling of historical cost data for project estimates.

6. Prepare lists of subcontractors/suppliers confirmed to be bidding on project.

7. Assist in the compiling of quantities/costs affecting general conditions.

8. Make calls to Architects/Engineers requesting clarifications or additional information regarding projects currently being worked on. Build relationships.

9. Review project documents for potential problem areas, as well as areas in which possible advantages can be received through innovation or preferential treatment by subcontractors or suppliers.

10. Attend pre-bid meetings and perform site investigations as assigned.

11. Bidding responsibility for small/medium sized bids, as follows:

a) Complete pre-bid survey and other up-front documents.

b) Perform majority of quantity surveys and pricing estimates.

c) Complete general conditions.

d) Prepare estimate posting sheets/summary sheet or computer bid day spreadsheets. Prepare alternate posting summary sheets.

e) Conduct plan review.

f) Obtain labor burden and applicable insurance rates.

g) Coordinate with estimating secretary completion of bid form, bid bond and proposal books.

h) Develop and complete project schedule.

12. Prepare scope narratives, clarifications, qualifications as required for either negotiated/CM work or lump sum bid projects.

13. Assist Senior Estimators or Chief Estimator in training and indoctrination of new estimators and field engineers who rotate through the estimating department.



 

Bid Day:

1. Perform Lead Estimator tasks on bid day. Major responsibilities are as follows:

a) Assist in posting or actually post bids; perform subcontract or selections.

b) Post remaining bids not posted prior to bid time.

c) Identify irresponsible subcontractor/supplier bids; error or omission in scope, etc.

d) Prepare, receive, and input bids for major bid day spreadsheets.

 

Computer Hardware/Software:  Become familiar in usage and maintenance of all estimating software.

 

Education and Experience:



Two to four years engineering or construction degree, and three to five years in the estimating field. Good basic math skills needed. General knowledge of estimating techniques, cost control, and material pricing required. Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, purchase orders, contracts, cost coding systems, etc., is essential. Physically must be able to hear and see well (naturally or with correction).
