Summary:

Responsible for directing and leading the U.S. Division Exploration and Appraisal program for oil and gas reserves. Has direct supervision of the entire Geological and Geophysical staff, including Chief Geologist, Chief Geophysicist, Exploration Manager and Appraisal Manager.

This position will supervise a team, and carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:
- Oversees division-wide exploration program investment recommendations;
- Produces recommendations for new areas for investment and growth to the Chief Operating Officer (COO);
- Develops division-wide exploration strategic plan within budget and policy guidelines;
- Manages the exploration and appraisal capital program;
- Oversees division?s appraisal program to ensure efficient hand-off of all discoveries to development;
- Evaluates exploration prospects as recommended by Business Managers and determines which prospects to present to COO;
- Builds industry relationships for future exploration business and to increase Nexen?s exposure to deal-flow;
- Oversees the optimization of prospect inventory through Business Managers to ensure prospects move through to maturation;
- With the assistance of the Business Managers and Chiefs, oversees all geological and geophysical staff assignments and developmental opportunities.

Education/Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor's of Science degree in Geology or Geophysics; Master's degree strongly preferred;
- Minimum of 15 years of professional oil and gas exploration and development experience;
- Previous exploration management experience required;
- Must be a proven oil finder;
- Must demonstrate superior confidence in exploration assessment ability and thoroughness in evaluation procedures;
- Must be able to work within, and lead, a high-energy work environment and demonstrate the leadership ability to handle multi tasks;
- Must have demonstrated strong business acumen and strong team-based decision making abilities.
