Job Description

 



 

Title: Safety Consultant

 

Position Purpose:

 

To provide complete loss control services, including safety training, to independent telephone companies.

 

Qualifications:

 

1. Minimum of a masters degree in Industrial Safety or related field.

 

2. Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the ability to interact with management and employees at all levels.

 

3. Ability to organize and conduct formal safety training sessions.

 

Accountability:

 

The position reports to, and is supervised by, the MTA Director of Safety & Education.

 

Principal Responsibilities:

 

1. Plan, coordinate, and conduct periodic safety training sessions for independent telephone companies.  This training should raise the safety knowledge and consciousness of company personnel, thereby increasing safe work performance and reducing accidents.  Curriculum topics will include, but are not limited to:  fleet safety, electrical hazards, confined space entry, working aloft, slips and  falls, back injury prevention, hand tools, personal protection equipment, the hazard communications standard, fire protection, work area protection, safety aspects of outdoor work, first aid, and CPR.  Other specialized training may include construction, heavy equipment operation, and material handling.

 

2. Develop comprehensive consulting services for member companies on issues regarding safety and health.

3. Provide proper interpretation of governmental safety, health, and environmental regulations and assist companies with compliance.

 

4. Assist companies with job safety analyses to determine training needs and establish safe work practices.

 

5. Assist companies with the analysis of lost time personal injury accidents and serious motor vehicle accidents to determine cause and recommend corrective action.

 

6. Prepare and maintain individual company files of all training sessions and activities.

 

7. Participate in meetings of the MTA Safety Advisory Committee and in other Association activities.

 

8. Participate in community, state, and national safety associations such as the American Society of Safety Engineers, National Safety Council, and Minnesota Safety Council.

 

9. Assume other duties and responsibilities assigned by the MTA Director of Safety & Education.

 

Nature & Scope:

 

The Safety Consultant provides on-site safety consulting and training to various independent telephone companies throughout Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa.  Each company is unique and may require a different level of consulting support according to its size, complexity, and sophistication.

 

The individual must develop and maintain good working relationships with the managers and employees of the various member companies.  Different ethnic groups, individual attitudes, and other problems related to human relations are confronted and must be resolved on a continuing basis by the Safety Consultant.  Sixty percent over-night travel is involved with travel and vehicle expenses reimbursed at a pre-determined level set by the Safety Advisory Committee.

 

The Safety Consultant must be knowledgeable in instructional techniques and adept at communication skills.  The individual must also possess the ability to understand and keep pace with changes and new technologies in the telecommunications industry, as well as keeping abreast of new governmental safety, health, and environmental legislation.
