Director of Sales - Consumer Products Company

My client, a consumer products company sells product throughout the United States on a direct basis and also through brokers and distributors. Revenues exceed $100 million. Products are used by consumers and purchased at retail. Products are sold through most retail channels including food, non-food, mass merchant, C-store and specialty. The company is looking for a Director of Sales to manage all field sales and regional sales management (about 50 total directs) and also the distributors and brokers. The company has been in business for many years and is the market leader in this category. It has been growing rapidly through market and market-share expansion and also through strategic acquisitions. Profitability has been excellent.


 


The Director of Sales will manage the total sales effort of the company from Chicago. The country is divided into regions and territories. The Sales Director will manage this structure and develop strategies to grow existing accounts and penetrate new business opportunities. He/she will work closely with the Director of Marketing to develop effective trade marketing programs, trade show plans and print and other promotion programs. The position reports to the President and is on the Executive Committee.


 


The Director of Sales must have at least 10 years direct selling in Consumer Packaged Goods and 5 years managing a national CPG sales organization. That experience should cover direct selling (and through distributors and brokers too) to food and non-food retailers, large and small chains, mass merchants and especially c-stores (c-store experience is an absolute). Some experience in CPG Marketing would be very helpful as would a 4-year degree. You also must be a self-starter, high-energy and willing to do whatever it takes to get results and make things happen. You must be able to build your team and lead them to success. You’ll need excellent communication skills and strong negotiation talent. The position will require considerable travel.


 


The base compensation could vary from $125,000’s to $175,000 or higher plus bonus, depending on experience. There are very good benefits and relocation.
