Lead Manufacturing Engineer

Under the direction of the Engineer Manager, plans and administers work on departmental projects, ensuring maximum productivity and cost-efficiency. Monitors and evaluates progress and results, and determines improvements that may be needed in operating procedures or ultimate objectives. This position usually requires at least eight years of experience.Coordinates and oversees design, construction, installation, and modification of facilities, equipment, and physical needs of a large plant operation; designs/adapts special production machinery. Assists in establishing standards and policies for installation, modification, testing and inspection of equipment. Reviews regulatory processes, including PSM coordination for compliance. Collaborates and coordinates activities as necessary with Maintenance Manager and related positions, including boiler / refrigeration and grounds supervisors. Researches, writes and manages capital projects, executing as approved.
Accountabilities:
1.Cost Effectiveness
Prepare capital equipment requests with support of Operations and Engineering teams.
Develop expense and capital budget for projects and facility maintenance.
Monitor budget variances and the inventory of spare parts to control cost.
Manage, plan, stage, and implement projects to improve plant efficiencies and safety.
Coordinate work efforts with Plant Engineering, Corporate Engineering and Research and Development on specific improvement projects and new product development.
2.Staffing
Schedules projects with contractors and / or service representatives.
Keep apprised of new equipment and services offered by vendors and their cost effectiveness.
3.Safety and Environment
Monitor machinery and operating procedures to maintain a safe work environment.
Initiate corrective action when needed to eliminate work hazards.
Assure compliance with all regulatory agencies including OSHA and EPA standards.
Principle Challenges
Forecast maintenance and capital improvement budgets for the future. Modify equipment to run higher quantities while maintaining the designed quality of the product. Balance scheduling given the needs for safety, routine maintenance, USDA demands and project completion dates. Complies with Labor Agreement and recognized safety practices in maximizing plant efficiencies. Works under general supervision; direct manager is offsite with internal customer relationship at facility.
No direct supervision. Position is responsible for coordinating activities in project management environment, including both internal and contractor relationships.
LATITUDE/DIMENSIONS:
Authority for obtaining and approving quotes, justifying expenses, making purchases, and supervising installation of capital improvement projects. Requires collaboration with Maintenance and Operations to coordinate scheduling of preventative maintenance and equipment repairs; purchasing expense items and coordinating line upgrade windows. Decisions may include stopping / changing production lines and plant operations to avoid injury, and to prevent facility or equipment damage. All projects involving constructing, fabricating, or installing new equipment are coordinated with this position. Collaborates with Controller, Operations Manager and Plant Manager pertaining to capital improvements. B.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent with eight to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. MBA preferred.
Knowledge of plant operations, production maintenance, machine shop, and industrial construction required, with strong knowledge and experience in project work and understanding of electrical and electronic principles.
Must have understanding of specific OSHA and EPA standards as they relate to plant environment.
Knowledge of USDA requirements preferred.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
