Database Specialist II

This position provides leadership support for contributing digital collection metadata into WorldCat, including harvesting collections, evaluating, and preparing the data. Position also provides end-user support related to OCLC batch processing services and serves as a technical consultant for WorldCat Batch Content Services and other areas of OCLC in the area of digital collection management. Initial focus will be on efficient loading of item level metadata from CONTENTdm collections.

"?Provides operational and technical support for users of CONTENTdm and other digital resources for batch updating to WorldCat and associated databases including record harvesting, evaluation, and data preparation.
"?Serves as consultant to OCLC staff on emerging non-MARC metadata trends as well as offline tools for managing this metadata.
"?Advises software development & product management on continuous improvement issues related to processing digital collection metadata.
"?Develops and refines best practices as related to digital resource metadata creation.
"?Supports and reviews the creation of OCLC documentation as appropriate, including cataloging rules and MARC format revision proposal, and other national and international standards.
"?Promotes offline updating of WorldCat and associated databases with digital resource metadata, including CONTENTdm.
"?Makes presentations to regional service partners and user groups.

Required Skills:
"?Position requires MLS from an ALA accredited library school or other Masters degree appropriate to the position and/or 5-7 or more years increasingly responsible OCLC library experience; expertise in the OCLC Cataloging System and in database construction and maintenance; 3-5 years experience in user support at OCLC or regional service provider or other library automation vendor.
"?Solid understanding of MARC formats and structures (e.g. MARC21, MARCXML, Dublin Core); standard cataloging tools, including Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules; and various classification schemes.
"?Working knowledge of UNIX operating system and its command syntax and well as OAI harvesting and various character encoding schemes (e.g. MARC8, Latin 1, UTF-8).
"?Experience in coordinating and directing projects.
"?End user knowledge of IBM mainframe and PC-based application software related to cataloging and databases.
"?Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
