Director, MIT Careers Office
Reporting to the Dean for Undergraduate Education (DUE), the director, MIT Careers Office (MITCO) leads a staff of eighteen permanent, five career interns and two temporary employees to deliver career services and preprofessional advising for approximately 4000 undergraduates and 6000 graduate students. The director provides overall leadership, policy determination,
planning efforts and innovations for a campus-wide career services program serving freshmen through alumni; provides vision and strategic direction necessary to make career preparation an integral part of an MIT education and transform Careers Office function from a narrow placement role to a developmental process; and partners with academic and administrative departments across the Institute to create a more integrated approach to career development for students and graduates.
Major functions of the office include: (1) providing comprehensive career services that span
business, public and nonprofit sectors to graduate and undergraduate students; (2) catalyzing and collaborating on career assistance efforts throughout MIT; (3) working with others to meet the needs of national and international employers from all sectors and advising them on effective recruitment strategies; (4) managing a range of advisory services to insure they respond to changes and trends in the workplace and in higher education; (5) working with the Division
of Students Life and Graduate Students Office to tie career advising to other aspects of
undergraduate and graduate education; (6) fostering relationships with the faculty and
staff and engaging them in students' career development; (7) representing the MIT Careers
Office to various internal and external audiences; and (8) continued development of Study
Abroad Programs and support for students applying for distinguished fellowships and scholarships.
DUE is a dynamic, evolving organization with a visible leadership role in undergraduate
education at MIT. As a member of the dean's senior management team, the director works in
concert with others across DUE to help carry its vision and mission; and collaborates with the
dean and fellow department heads to conceive and implement DUE-wide strategic initiatives and
generate new ideas and strategies. The director also provides advice, assistance and input to the dean on enterprise level decisions, policies and directions.
Requirements: a master's degree or Ph.D. in higher education, career counseling or related
field; ten to fifteen years of relevant experience in higher education or college relations and recruiting; and knowledge of science and technology careers and where analytically-oriented graduates can add value in a world where production of science and engineering graduates is increasing worldwide. Significant experience with global experiential learning needed to develop and integrate foreign study abroad and foreign internship programs in the careers office. Experience developing and implementing career programs and providing career or academic
counseling required, as is knowledge of corporate relations. A deep interest in and enthusiasm
about the principles of an MIT education and in extending that education to contributing to
society and solving the world's problems expected. Demonstrated leadership qualities and
broad understanding of career opportunities available to MIT students and graduates required. Must be able to interact collaboratively and effectively with students and faculty at a research institution; and possess high ethical standards, knowledge and appreciation of cross-cultural and bias issues, and demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations. Excellent interpersonal skills needed, including ability to listen carefully and communicate tactfully. Must demonstrate an
entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm for finding creative solutions, including ability to anticipate and circumvent potential problems or find creative solutions if they do occur.
