Faculty Chair, Health Information Management

DeVry University is currently seeking Associate Professor and Chair of Health Information Management (HIM Technical Specialty Chair) for its location in Arlington, VA.  Relocation assistance will be considered.

 



Position Summary







Faculty role: Responsible for facilitating student learning by delivering educational courses and programs in accordance with DeVry University requirements. Develop course syllabi and lesson plans, and apply teaching techniques to best achieve course and programmatic objectives.





Program role: Serve as Faculty Chair of the Health Information Management (HIM) Technical Specialty within the Bachelor of Science in Technical Management degree program at this location. Responsible for administrative support of the HIM Technical Specialty, working with students, adjunct instructors, staff and campus leadership to achieve program outcomes.







Reporting: This position reports at the campus level to the Dean of Academic Operations. In addition, this position has a dotted-line relationship to the DeVry University Program Director for Health Information in Academic Affairs at the corporate level, necessary to facilitate effective curricular roll-out and feedback, to assure consistency of program plan of study across the University system and to apply accreditation standards at each location. All faculty employment is at-will.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities ? Teaching





Includes but is not limited to: 1. Develop and provide students with an approved DeVry University syllabus that follows a template established by the local campus consistent with the course curriculum guide, and which includes the terminal course objectives. 2. Organize, prepare, and regularly revise and update all course materials. 3. Use appropriate technological options for online technologies and course-related software, including Websites, e-mail, and online discussions for preparing the course and making it accessible to students. 4. Model effective oral and written communications that engage the students, provide clarity, and improve student learning. 5. Set clear expectations for the course by publishing course terminal objectives, all assignment/examinations dates, and show the grade weight distribution of various evaluation categories. 6. Ensure that the content and level of material included on exams corresponds to the course terminal objectives. 7. Demonstrate consistency and fairness in the preparation and grading of exams, and provide timely feedback to students.







Essential Duties and Responsibilities ? Administrative support





Includes but is not limited to: 1. Recruiting and screening of qualified new HIM faculty; quality assessment of continuing HIM faculty performance. 2. Advising and counsel to new and continuing students regarding Bachelor?s-level HIM career issues and related activities such as student clubs or AHIMA membership. 3. Support of admissions staff as needed to help evaluate new student prospects, review transcripts for this degree completion program and educate recruiters on the HIM profession. 4. Identify professional practice sites and develop relationships with sites as needed to support student practical experiences; coordinate placement of students at practicum sites, work with instructors to monitor and evaluate student performance. 5. Preparation, reporting and related activities as needed to support the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) accreditation process. 6. Organization and leadership of an Advisory Board, liaison with local healthcare/health information community as required to support program success. 7. Participation in meetings, teleconferences from time to time as a part of the DeVry Health Information Program Chairs peer group.

Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills







Current RHIA (Registered Health Information Administrator) credential required. A master?s degree is required for teaching at the Bachelor?s level. A Doctorate is preferred. Minimum of two years teaching at the postsecondary level is preferred. Additional requirements driven by state licensing or accreditation considerations may apply.







A successful candidate must have requisite course subject matter expertise and outstanding communication skills. Also, a successful candidate must have excellent motivational and instructional skills in a diverse and non-traditional environment. Must be able to work in a collegial manner and facilitate the efforts of diverse groups.







Experience managing a health information department/function or related experience in a professional health information management role required. Teaching experience and/or academic management in an HIM program is highly desired.
