Mission College is now accepting applications from enthusiastic, qualified persons interested in a full-time, tenure tract counseling position. Primary responsibilities entail providing academic, career, personal and counseling services to students to assist them in achieving their educational goals, and assisting with college outreach activities. The counselor is also required to participate in the professional and academic work within the department and college. Applicants who possess the knowledge, skills, abilities, and life experiences to address the cultural and educational needs of a linguistically and culturally diverse student population are encouraged to apply.
ASSIGNMENT
This is a full time, 11-month, (32.8 hours per week) tenure-track position beginning in Fall 2006. The work assignment consists of counseling, teaching and other responsibilities and activities that are necessary for the effective and efficient operation of the department, college, and district. Assignment may include various times of the day or evening, Monday through Saturday. Work location: Mission College.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Salary placement $47,433 (Step 1, Column A) to maximum earnable $93,913 (Step 24, Column F) annually, is based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master?s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, education counseling, social work or career development, or a California License in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling (LMFCC) OR
Possess a valid California Community College Credential in Counseling OR
The equivalent. Degrees must be earned from an accredited institution. Candidates with degrees not identical to the required state or local qualifications must apply for equivalency by completing the equivalency form, which is part of the application package. This form must be completed for employment consideration.
Candidates with foreign degrees must provide official certification of equivalency to U.S. degrees, by a certified U.S. credential review service. Simple translation of the language on foreign diplomas, transcripts, coursework, or similar will NOT suffice, thus will cause the application packet to be judged as incomplete.
Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, counsel and work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Teaching, training, and/or cultural life experiences which enable one to teach, tutor, and mentor students from diverse language, cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, or educational backgrounds.
Knowledge of assessment and test interpretation including: academic, career, personality and aptitude instruments.
Experience in outreach, especially to high school students.
Knowledge of the California community college matriculation process.
Demonstrated skills in academic, career, personal, and motivational counseling.
Experiences in counseling/teaching, preferably at a community college level.
Knowledge of community organizations, social service agencies, and other resources.
Knowledge and skills in the use of technology as a counseling tool.
Skills in group facilitation and leadership development.
Ability to work effectively as a team member.
Ability to take an active role in working with faculty, student groups, and college support services.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Counseling duties are assigned by the Vice President of Student Services in consultation with the counselor and the Counseling Department Chair and may consist of one or more of the following:
Counseling and advising students including academic, career, and personal counseling and development of Education Plans.
Perform activities such as orientation, advisement, and follow-up.
Work with campus departments and programs to implement outreach activities for identified populations, schools, industry and community. Primary emphasis will be on high schools.
Articulate with the community-at-large, college staff, students and administration regarding the goals and objectives of Mission College.
Specialized work as necessary during registration periods.
Articulation meetings.
Formal in-service training.
Program/service development activities.
Scheduled drop-in time and appointments.
Other duties as assigned by the Vice President as required for the department and/or college.
Attend department, division, college, and district meetings.
Perform other collegial responsibilities by participating in the shared governance activities of the college and the district and in other special projects as needed.
Upon consultation with the counselor, counselors may also be assigned by the Vice President to teach one or more counseling courses during a semester.
Counselors have the option of teaching outside their primary area on an overload basis. To be eligible for an assignment outside their area of primary responsibility, they must qualify through the established guidelines.
Counselors who teach courses must comply with the same duties required of the academics as outlined in their job description, including ? hour of office hours for each section taught.
Work cooperatively within the college community.
Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice, and/or bias.
Demonstrate positive communication skills within the college community.
Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.
Assume institutional responsibilities which are of value to the department, division, college and/or District such as: actively participate in the spirit of shared governance in department, division, college and district institutional responsibilities. Such responsibilities may include recruitment and hiring, class schedule preparation, budget development, performance appraisals, mentorship, supervision of support staff, student recruitment and retention, curriculum and program development and evaluation, program review, club advising, committees, accreditation, articulation, and other duties as assigned.
