Game & Simulation Programming Instructor
As one of the largest degree-granting higher education systems in North America, DeVry University provides high-quality, career-oriented associate, bachelor?s and master?s degree programs in technology, business and management. Approximately 53,000 students are enrolled at its more than 78 locations that are in 22 states and Canada, as well as through DeVry University Online. DeVry University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association (NCA). This position is based in Crystal City (Arlington), VA.
Position Summary
Teach courses specializing in Game and Simulation programming on a full-time basis. These courses are designed to enable successful students to join the private and public sector game software industry. Specific courses and topics include: Introduction to Game and Simulation Development, Practical Game Design with Lab, Simulation Design with Lab, Game Engine Design and Integration with Lab, and Programming MMOG with Lab.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Develops strategies to teach the course content for the entire term including instructional objectives, assignments, textbooks, weight of grades and delivery methods.
2. Develops and provides to students an approved DeVry University syllabus that follows a template established by the local campus, which includes terminal course objectives.
3. Organizes, prepares and regularly revises/updates all course materials.
4. Uses appropriate technological options for online technologies and appropriate course related software, including websites, e-mail and online discussions for preparing the course and making it accessible to students.
5. Models exceptional verbal and written communication.
6. Organizes and sequences topics in a logical progression and paces the delivery to meet the needs of the class.
7. Utilizes educational technology (such as PowerPoint, remote access to syllabi and grades, classroom projection systems, online courses or course components with interactive capabilities) to enhance learning.
8. Establishes positive classroom relationships with students by being actively engaged in the classroom and lab. Provides opportunities for in-class discussions and questions and displays enthusiasm about the students, the subject matter, and the learning process.
9. Incorporates higher-level learning (i.e. application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation) by giving students opportunities to develop information literacy and problem-solving skills, and by connecting their current study to lab assignments and previous/future study in the related disciplines.
10. Sets clear expectations for the course by publishing assignment/exam dates and the weight distribution of various evaluation categories.
11. Ensures that the content and level of material included on exams has been adequately covered in class.
12. Designs assignments and tests to conform to the objectives of the Curriculum Guide.
Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills
Master's degree in relevant discipline. Minimum of 3 years related industry and/or academic experience. Prior teaching experience is desirable. Must possess industry programming and/or design experience in one or several of the relevant subjects in the program (simulation design, visual/audio design, multi-media programming, or game engine design). Must have required subject matter expertise (game/simulation) and outstanding communication skills. Must have excellent motivational and instructional skills in a diverse and non-traditional environment. Must be able to facilitate diverse groups.
