Grant Writer-Development Associate

The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA) seeks an Associate to join the School?s five person development team. HSA is a multi-disciplinary training school of the arts for young people located in upper Manhattan.? Reporting to the Director of Development, the Associate will cultivate and solicit grants from foundations, corporations and government sources to support the full range of HSA programs.

The Associate will manage and grow the portfolio of major foundations and corporations to ensure a continuous revenue stream; Develop strategies to cultivate long-term, comprehensive relationships with all institutional grant-making organizations; Initiate and maintain communications with prospects and funders through telephone and written correspondence and site visits; Conduct online and other methods of prospect research; Write and submit letters of inquiry, proposals, and reports; and coordinate site visits.

He or she will work with staff members at all levels to ensure that application deadlines are met, that proposals are of the highest quality and that grantors expectations are met; Meet with senior staff to gather programmatic information; Work with the CFO to develop project budgets; and provide ongoing oversight to ensure that funded programs meet grantor expectations and requirements.

The Associate attends departmental, inter-departmental and external committee meetings; supervises an administrative assistant, interns and volunteers, prepares monthly activity and other internal reports and works with volunteers.

The ideal candidate candidates must have a B.A. and at least five years fundraising experience in an arts, cultural or educational environment with progressively increasing responsibilities and demonstrated success in grant seeking. He/she will possess excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; a thorough knowledge of and experience with online research methods; excellent time and project management skills; and a thorough knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of Raiser?s Edge is a plus. In addition, candidates should be highly motivated, detail-oriented and organized; able to plan, control and lead projects; meet deadlines; and work independently and collaboratively in a diverse environment. ?A familiarity with New York City funders and an interest in the arts is strongly preferred.
