CHARACTERISTICS UNIQUE TO THIS POSITION
This San Jose/Evergreen Community College District position is represented by the California School Employees Collective Bargaining Union. The Instructional Laboratory Technician II, Physical Science reports to the Dean of Math & Science at San Jose City College. This is a part-time, 11 months per year, 18 hours per week position; Monday-Thursday, 4:00pm-8:30pm.
POSITION PURPOSE
Performs support services for a variety of courses in chemistry, physics, astronomy and geology by providing materials, supplies equipment and related logistical support to lecture, laboratory, or other activities; prepares materials, supplies and equipment using special methods and procedures related to the discipline. Direct or general supervision is provided by management or academic personnel. Technical and functional supervision may also be provided by instructional or higher level classified personnel. Responsibilities may include providing technical and functional direction to other Instructional Laboratory Technician I positions or student assistants, as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following
? Maintain and assure the security of the assigned instructional laboratory facility and related areas.
? Dispense and retrieve laboratory equipment, tools, materials, and reusable supplies.
? Safely dispose of damaged and/or useless equipment.
? Prepare chemical solutions and reagents.
? Inventory and order necessary equipment, chemicals and reagents.
? Maintain library of all instructional manuals.
? Safely handle and store a wide variety of chemicals used in laboratory experiments.
? Prepare, transport, set up, and take down materials and equipment used in instructional laboratory demonstrations, exercises, practicals, scenarios, and other activities.
? Discuss future laboratory activities and scheduled events with instructors; prepare laboratory facilities and assemble supplies.
? Demonstrate to students the proper and safe operation of assigned equipment.
? Assist students with checking in and out of their laboratory lockers, microscale kits, etc.
? Meet with and actively engage service technicians during their maintenance and/or training visits.
? Orient new faculty to the laboratories, stockroom organization, instrumentation, and procedures.
? Prepare and provide Lockers Inventory Sheets and safety information sheets for all chemistry laboratories prior to start of each semester.
? Perform basic informational activities in determining pricing, availability, and specifications of necessary supplies.
? Obtain and maintain material Safety Data Sheets.
? Ensure safe handling, storage and proper labeling of hazardous materials and hazardous waste which may include performing any departmental inspections as required by regulatory agencies.
? Clean and maintain tools and equipment and sure their safekeeping; clean and provide for general maintenance of the laboratory shop areas at conclusion of scheduled activities.
? Perform preventive maintenance on equipment, calibrate, and make minor repairs; report need for major repairs or place service calls as authorized.
? Under direction in instructor, monitor students for proper and safe methods and procedures in laboratory equipment operation and materials handling.
? Assist with the hire and supervision of student hourly workers as needed.
? Perform a variety of miscellaneous office work such as preparing purchase requisitions, answering the telephone, data entry, scheduling maintenance and repair appointments, and photocopying.
? Provide general information regarding assigned program to participants, potential participants, and other interested parities.
? Maintain routine records, files, inventories, and reports.
? Order, pick up, deliver, and set up audio-visual equipment needed to conduct laboratory presentations.
? Perform other duties reasonably related to the job classification.
DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
? Basic procedures and practices of maintaining a supply room and storage area.
? Tools, equipment, materials, and supplies which are used in the particular instructional laboratories and their proper and safe handling.
? Supply and inventory procedures for the effective maintenance of stock levels.
? Modern office practices and procedures including filing and the operation of office equipment including personal and on-line computers.
? Apply language skills to read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; and speak effectively before groups of students or faculty.
? Apply mathematical skills to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; convert from one unit of measure to another; and compute rate, ratio, and percent.
? Utilize reasoning skills to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form, and deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
? Effectively communicate and interact with persons of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
? Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
? Lift and move up to 50 pounds.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
? Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.
? Success integrating diversity as appropriate into the major duties outlined in the job description and in the duties listed in the District?s hiring policy; or demonstrated equivalent transferable skills to do so.
? Any combination equivalent to: Associates degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of college level chemistry and chemistry laboratory.
BENEFITS:
This position does not include any district health benefits.
SALARY:
Range 66, $16.06 ? $19.61 hourly based on 2005-06 Salary Schedule. (Hiring salary generally at the beginning of the range)
