Applications Engineer, Fiber Optics

Founded in 1959, California Eastern Laboratories is the NEC Corporation's North American sales and marketing partner for RF, wireless, optoelectronic and fiber optic semiconductor products. NEC is one of the largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world.

 

 

SUMMARY

Responsible for providing direct technical support to customers for NEC?s fiber optic devices (lasers and detectors) in order to win new design-ins. Primary technical interface between factory and strategic business unit, factory and customer, factory and sales.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

 

? Deliver technical expertise for customer applications based on NEC?s fiber optic devices.

? Provide detailed customer support, design consultation, component troubleshooting, quality and reliability engineering.  Understand customers? technical problems, recommend solutions to meet their needs, and ensure customer satisfaction.

? Assist sales in their product selection and in assessing potential application of company products to meet customer needs.  Support new product introductions.

? Acquire strong understanding of factory procedures and capabilities.

? Communicate system, subsystem, and component trends, implications, possibilities, and solutions to the strategic business unit, sales group, factory, and customer.

? Work with NEC design engineers and customers to define specifications for new products.

? Determine if a technology is production capable.

? Work with IC suppliers on application notes and reference designs.

? Deliver technical training classes related to fiber optic devices and applications.

? Generate required literature and documentation.  Maintain promotional literature including data sheets.

? Conduct customer visits; attend trade shows, and sales meetings as required.

? Develop an in house test and measurement laboratory in the next 3-4 years.

? Perform other related tasks as assigned.

? Work on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.  Demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.  Interact with internal and external personnel.

 

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 

? Bachelor?s degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics, plus five (5) or more years recent experience  in applications/design engineering in fiber optics/semiconductor industry or Master?s degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics, plus three (3) or more years recent experience  in applications/design engineering in fiber optics / semiconductor industry.

? Must be a self-starter with an extensive background in fiber optics and understanding of product technology, performance, and reliability.

? Strong analytical and problem solving skills

? Highly organized and detail oriented.

? Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

? Ability to work in a team or take on individual responsibility as required.

? Experience of working in a high pressure environment and of managing relationships with customers will be an advantage.
