About the Opportunity!

 

We seek a talented Engineer to be an integral member of a new group of electrical specialists within the Fossil Operations Department. This centrally located team (Akron, OH) will be responsible to review and implement improvements for the fossil fueled power plants.

 

In this role the selected Team member will:

 

* Work closely with plant staff to identify and monitor plant initiatives that ensure world class protection and coordination on fossil plant electrical equipment.

 

* Identify standard protection and coordination schemes for such power plant equipment as generators, transformers, switchgear, motors, and cable systems.

 

* Support continuous improvement in all areas of equipment protection and coordination to assure optimal plant reliability, equipment availability, and safe operation.

 

* Provide guidance to Technical and Operation personnel to maintain safe operating limits on electrical equipment and to optimize equipment performance.

 

* Assist the plant in managing equipment health by establishing protective limits to prevent damage to equipment.

* Work closely with design engineers to implement standard protection schemes for the generator and other critical electrical equipment.

 

* Review and assist in trouble shooting significant operating problems and plant trips that involve critical plant electrical equipment.

 

* Perform fault analysis, load flow and short circuit studies.

 

* Coordinate Energy Delivery Planning and Protection studies.

 

* Prepare protective device specifications and setting calculations.

 

* Coordinate and maintain the Relay Setting Database.

 

* Perform voltage studies (i.e. regulation, tap settings)

 

At the Senior Engineer level the candidate will:

 

* Provide strategic direction, planning, and implementation of protection and coordination schemes.

 

* Evaluate effectiveness of current protection strategy and recommend changes as necessary.

 

* Apply engineering skills to analyze and solve complex technical problems.

 

* Prepare protective device specifications and complex setting calculations.

 

* Prepare relay settings and coordinate relay database development.

 

* Develop programs, policies, and recommend new initiatives as appropriate to improve equipment protection.

 

* Direct the efforts of others to accomplish goals.

 

At the Advanced Engineer level the candidate will:

 

* Plan and implement protection and coordination schemes.

 

* Apply engineering skills to analyze and solve routine technical problems.

 

* Prepare protective device specifications and routine setting calculations..

 

* Prepare relay settings and input into database.

 

* Develop recommendations for improving equipment protection.

 

6 Month Goals to Include:

 

* Establish all necessary communication channels/contacts with the Plant and Project Engineering.

* Begin development of Fossil generation electrical protection standards.

* Coordinate relay database development and prepare strategy for documenting settings.

* Begin assessment of current relay technology and replacement recommendations

 

It is REQUIRED that the selected candidate possess a Bachelors Degree in Engineering (Electrical Engineering preferred) The Selected Candidate will have a minimum of 8 years direct experience (12 years minimum direct experience for the Sr. Engineer level).

 

* A Masters Degree will be preferred but not required.

* P.E. Licence is preferred but not required.

* Proven safety record. Takes precautions and preventative measures to ensure a safe work environment.

* Promotes team spirit and works collaboratively to achieve team goals.

* Must be a self-starter, able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

* Able to analyze complex technical problems and apply engineering skills.

* Travel to FirstEnergy plants located primarily in Ohio and Pennsylvania will be required.

Overall % of Travel is approximately 30% on average.
