Energy Operations Manager
Job Requirements:
Bachelors degree in a specialized or related discipline or an equivalent combination of related education, training and work experience. Advanced knowledge in electric or gas systems operations, transmission/transportation systems and scheduling processes and requirements. Thorough knowledge of ISO operations and control of the generation and transmission system or natural gas pipelines, capacities and ownership is required. Advanced knowledge of internal risk management procedures. The successful candidates will typically possess 5 years supervising experience or performing in function to be managed. Typically possess 12 plus years of experience in electric or natural gas system operations. Dispatch certification may be required.
Preferences:
Experience as an expert in electric or natural gas system operations. Understanding of the operational and economic impacts of the deregulated energy markets. Advance knowledge of dispatch principles and policies and the ability to translate policy into effective plans and procedures is preferred.
Typical Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will manage work performed by Energy Operations Specialist on analysis, coordinates electric or natural gas system operation, performs day-ahead or real-time electric or natural gas scheduling tasks, develops recommendations and provides expert consulting to address complex and unique problems that may cross organizational boundaries and/or require advanced operational knowledge to resolve. They will interface with management and shift supervisors at the CAISO to coordinate SCE operations with the ISO. They will develop a daily operation plan in conjunctions with the ISO shift supervisor. The Energy Operations Shift Manager is a subject matter expert on ISO real-time markets, operations and settlements. The successful candidate works directly with ISO regarding bids, schedules, outages and adjustments, or directly with natural gas pipelines and suppliers regarding outages, available capacity and scheduling issues. They will solve problems and take the lead on resolving disputes. They will work with generation plant and transmission operators to optimize operations and insure instructions are carried out. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring all aspects of daily activity. They will develop SCE's response to CAISO declared emergencies, including the procurement of Out of Market Resources at the direction of CAISO. They will coordinate with generation plant operators and supervisors to optimize schedules and ensure reliable operations and verify dispatch instructions are carried out. They will perform risk management functions in avoidance of penalties associated with CAISO operations and WECC RMS criteria. They will develop and/or implement procurement strategy based on least cost dispatch methodology. They will monitor electric or natural gas system conditions and generation plant constraints to formulate and/or refine procurement plans. They will manage, implement and/or lead major specialized operational projects, tasks or work groups to solve critical operational problems. The Energy Operations Shift Manager will mentor and provide leadership for, and may be responsible for, direct management of Energy Operations Specialists. They will check work, administer work schedules, provide input for/or completes performance appraisals and assumes responsibility for accuracy and proper operations. They will be responsible for final decisions regarding the operation of the electric or natural gas system, which typically have a major impact at the Corporate and/or department level. The Manager makes day-ahead or real-time decisions that have direct major reliability or monetary effect on the Corporation and a major impact on the electric or natural gas markets/systems, as well as ISO or natural gas pipeline operations. In certain cases, they may be required to be knowledgeable in areas of both electric and natural gas scheduling and operating procedures.
