Research Engineer - Geomechanics

Location: Houston, Texas, United States Overview: Research, development and the deployment of technology for Shell's global exploration and production businesses is managed by Shell?s technology division of Shell International Exploration and Production (SIEP). Two companies, one based in The Netherlands and the other in the United States, work together to provide a wide range of products and services to Shell companies in the sector.

Shell's EP research center, Bellaire Technology Center, is one of the main technology centers for Shell globally, with other EP technology centers in Houston and New Orleans in the U.S. In-house R&D is supported by partnerships with external companies to maintain Shell?s leading edge technology for supply to Shell companies as well as the open market.

Shell International Exploration and Production Inc. is currently seeking a Research Engineer ? Geomechanics for its Houston, Texas location.

Responsibilities:

In this position, you will be responsible for the development of a strategic experimental program for the conventional Rock Mechanics and High Temperature rock mechanics laboratories, supervision of the technicians associated with these labs, interpretation of the experimental data and coordination of this information with other researchers within and out side the team to calibrate constitutive rock behavior models.

Key Accountabilities Include:
Designing and conducting geomechanics testing and fundamental rock mechanics understanding related to high temperature thermal recovery processes, and in optimizing thermal recovery of field pilots/commercial development
Monitoring daily operation of the rock mechanics and High temperature geomechanics laboratories and supervision of laboratory technicians
Analyzing and making use of data from yard and field experiments for model implementation and calibration
Interfacing with other subsurface disciplines and other expertise within the Company, to support field projects and technology field tests
Working in coordination with other research engineers to develop a robust program to calibrate constitutive models to describe complex rock behavior under extreme temperature and stress conditions

Requirements:

To be considered for this position, you must possess a Bachelor?s Degree or higher in the field of Geo-mechanics, Civil/Geotechnical Engineering, and/or Mechanical Engineering and have approximately 5 to 15 years of working experience in high temperature testing and sound background in high temperature rock behavior and constitutive description/modeling. A PhD in geomechanics related subjects preferred. You should have a demonstrable appreciation of oil and gas field data and hands-on knowledge of history matching and model calibration.

Ability to communicate effectively with other researchers, contractors, consultants and field staff
Familiarity and knowledge of Hydrology, Geophysics and Structural Geology will be advantageous
