Wastewater/Utilities Operator

The Wastewater/Utilities Operators are responsible for the daily operation of the potable water and the wastewater systems. Potable water production, treatment, and distribution, as well as wastewater collection and treatment must all be maintained in compliance with state and federal regulations. This requires process control and technical decision by the operator. One of the positions based in the Northstar Field, will be required to utilize different modes of transportation to and from the island such as helicopter, hovercraft, boat, track vehicle and ice road transport.
Accountabilities Include:
Interface with craftspersons to ensure safe performance of maintenance and repairs to water and wastewater equipment.
Take accountability and ensure safe and effective operation of the water and wastewater facilities.
Ensure operation is in compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations.
Perform sampling, laboratory testing and laboratory test analysis.
Perform process control changes, record keeping and federal and state report preparation.
Perform water distribution to remote facilities.
Operate and maintain a small public swimming pool.
Ensure compliance for emergency response to fire suppression water needs.
Perform basic operator maintenance duties on plant equipment.
Purge and make vessels, pumps, lines and other process equipment safe for work by others.
Issue permits and monitor work by others for compliance with safe procedures and permit limitations.
Perform plant and vehicle housekeeping duties.
Operate the following types of equipment: thickeners, pumps (centrifugal, progressing cavity, piston, diaphragm), centrifuges, air compressors, filtration units, chlorinating systems, heating/ventilating systems, diesel driven pump, system surveillance panels, blowers, valves (control, power operated and manual), lift stations, electric heat exchangers, water storage reservoirs, tank farm, impedance heat and other types of heat trace systems.
Required Qualifications:
To be considered for the role of Wastewater/Utilities Operators applicants must have:
Legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than your current employer.
A willingness and ability to work a 12-hour day shift with a 1 week on/off or 2 week on/off rotational shift on the North Slope of Alaska.
A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
A minimum of a State of Alaska operator certification at the following level: Level II in Water Treatment.
A minimum of 3 years of experience analyzing biological processes, plant flows and mechanical problems.
The ability to routinely lift items up to 50 pounds in weight with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Proficient with Excel and Windows.
The ability to work safely in an industrial setting especially in a laboratory, in proximity to open tanks, rotating equipment, wet floors, catwalks, chemicals, pressure vessels, storage tanks and icy stairs.
The ability to deal safely with extremes of heat and cold, dust, fumes, and biological aerosols.
The ability to work well with others and influence outcomes without direct supervision.
The ability to demonstrate leadership and teamwork skills.
The ability to contribute in a performance oriented fast-paced team.
Excellent planning and organizational skills with strong communication and networking skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications the successful candidate is likely to be able to demonstrate:
A minimum of a State of Alaska operator certification at the following levels: Level III in Wastewater Treatment and Level II in Water Treatment.
The ability to read and understand mechanical drawings, reference materials (such as Standard Methods), and operation manuals relative to water and wastewater treatment, distribution, and collection.
